The level plug on my gear box has been rounded off and I can't get it out. I decided to fill the box from the top, and took the gear shift out to fill it from there. I can't seem to get any oil in this way. What is the best way to fill from the top? Pete |

Why won't the oil go in? Best option would be to weld a nut to the filler plug or use a cold chisel to get that bung out, then replace it. |

I thouht filling from the top would be an easier option to start with, but I may have to resort to the weld option. Should I be able to fill through where the gear stick goes in?? |

Been a while since I've had a Vit stick out but I'd think it should, may just take a while to dribble thru? |

Does things right the first time. Weld a nut on the plug, remove and replace. |

Vit has a semi remote shifter, would take a long time to fill through the shifter hole... |

Dead right there! Plan B weld nut on, should have done that in the 1st place. |

X2. The oils only passage through to the box is beside the remote shifter rods. You'll be there for weeks! |

I know everyone here is all for welding, but if you don't have one, try this. Buy a Kincrome 11mm square sump adaptor (yes strange they actually make these - I got mine in a set that didn't have a 10mm so I had to grind mine down anyway), then grind half a mm or so off 2 of the sides until it will almost fit in the rounded hole - hit it with a hammer to jam it firmly in the hole, attach breaker bar and remove the plug. Buy a new plug for next time, and grind the square adaptor to an even 10mm - use that and you'll never end up with rounded plugs again. |

Thanks for the help. I will chase one of those up for next time. I have welded a short bolt on (easier to hold when on your own) and got it out. New oil in, will be able to drive this weekend!! |
