Post subject:  Question regarding 1.6 conversion. sump change

Hey guys,
starting my 1.6 conversion, and i dummy fitted the motor in today with the baleno 1.6 sump on, and there is 170mm clearance from the sump to the diff.
Is this normal? if so why do people change the sump over?
Can you see m having any difficulties if i leave the 1.6 on there?
thanks

I have a 2" bl and shackle ext

I have uploaded a couple of dodgey pics to help interpret what im talking about :P

The photos don't show the angle all that well, but usually there is less clearance than that.
My last zook was SPUA and needed the 1.3sump before the car could be driven, clearance was so tight.

My current zook is SPOA and has the 1.6 sump. Even in spring over configuration I don't have anything near the 170mm clearance you mention.
My high steer components will interfere with the sump as the suspension compresses.

My idea is the 1.3 sump is more suited to offroad as the pickup will mostly always stay in oil because of the deep section in the sump, on inclines etc.

X2 - started typing that and got distracted. I think the drop on the Baleno sump is the wrong way around for a North/South engined 4WD.

I am currently running 50mm hd ome springs and 2" ext shackles and have had no drama with the 1.6 sump. I'm planning on dropping the shackles soon for better road manners so I may run into dramas then. Am hoping moving the diff forward 20mm might solve it. When you took your measurements, was the entire engine weight on the springs or were you still holding the engine with the crane?

Edit: Sorry, wasn't paying enough attention, I have a vit 1.6, not baleno, couldn't tell you the difference between sumps...

The baleno sump is angled and quite shallow.

it's not built for the hektic angles.

Steve.
