Post subject:  Larger fuel tank
Okay so I did a quick half an hour search.
So I might have missed some information

So I read that the lwb efi vit tank (55l I think) can squeeze into the chassis rail of a Sierra
But require new mounts, that doesnt really bother me at all

Does the shocks come in any contact with the tank at all
I was thinking of just switching the sandwich plates around and move the shocks infront of the rear diff with custom top shock mount.
And cutting old cross member out.
Only con I see of doing this is I read stones will be hitting the shock
This doesn't bother me hence that's what a stone quard is for.

Will the filler come below the chassis or above, I guess it depends how you mount it.
Can you run both a engine mounted fuel pump and the efi pump at the same time
Or just not run the efi pump.
Engine will be a g16a (carby)

A sierr tank is approximately 600 x 420.

A LWB vit tank is approximately 760 x 490.

I'd wager that the tank and rear diff pumpkin will hit. And the tank will leave no room at all for your exhaust t pass by it.

Not sure about the filler, but I'd assume that it would be a PITA also.

But then again it's a bit to tall for a Sierra
Is there any other tank around 50l to 60l that will just fit in the rails another vit, Jimmy tank
Or will I have to just walk around a wreckers with a measuring tape

This. Look at cars. Utes and commecials will have wierd shaped tanks that are just too big.

Vit tanks are alot of work for a very small gain IMO ( unless you want a swimmer pump for EFI)

Most long range tanks are about $1K. I can't see too many sierra owners shelling out that sort of coin for a fuel capacity increase that a $30 jerry can will give. Not to mention the loss of ground clearance.....

Still quite pricey

longranger also apparently have a 90ltr jobbie
for lwb sierras, however i couldn't find a retailer in darwin that would get me
one and they wouldn't deal directly with me.

theres a place in WA that will custom manufacture fuel tanks (and certify them) with baffles etc and a sender unit for around $1500...its a lot of coin, but you get a result thats made to fit spot on (you could cut some of the tray outto give them more room to work with as well).

i borked at the price though cos im not doing any touring anytime soon and im happy to just keep filling it up every 300km =P

I believe they do a 80+ tank to sierras with body lifts. maybe over the 100L mark?

I did some calculations awhile ago... Its possible to build an effective 55 liter tank(58liter), well gaining clearance, on a SWB with a 2inch body... Exhaust would need work. Easy enough if your not worried about compliance i guess..

I have an 85L long ranger in my coily (probably the only thing that is interchangeable :roll: ). It has a 2" body lift to accomodate it. You wouldn't want ithe tank to be any larger, since in relation to ground clearance, you may as well tow a boat.

Something else to consider is that you will need to find/fabricate a larger expansion tank. If you don't, fuel backs up to the carbon cannister and leaks out of it's overflow. This runs down the inner guard and leaks over the engine pipe.

I use a XF Ute (66ltr) tank that rest above original tank under the tray connected by Duel Tank Solonoid giving me over 1000km between fuel stops.

Well I've measured up the space on the drivers side of my rear driveshaft and can fit a 50-60L aux tank in there. Will be making that for my cape trip.

Should give me a total of 130-140L and a range of 1200+ kms :lol:

Under the Alloy Tray, I did fit a small 36ltr tank to SJ410 some 20yrs ago that fitted between trans box and rear diff
