Post subject:  5 Speed Rebuild
Hi Guys,

I need to rebuild my GFs 89 sierra tranny. Anyone had a crack at this? I've rebuilt my transfer with 4.9s before. Is it much harder than this? I only ask because the manual (non fsm) that I've got says to get it done by a professional. It gives no more info than that lol. I would have thought it would be similar technically to the transfer.

grab the factory manual from the downloads section here and have a look

I havent done one but it would be pretty similar to most manuals, take your time and leave lots of room to lay everything out logically

the manual will tell you if there are any special tools you need or measurements you may not be able to make

Thanks Royce! Didn't know there was an FSM here (or a downloads section for that matter)

I just found this link to a full rebuild too which should make life pretty easy. Looks pretty similar to the transfer rebuild I've done.

I already got the rebuild kit. It came with all bearings, seals and syncros. I can look back through my stuff and find out what it cost me if you like.

OK found the receipt. Got the rebuild kit from Locktup 4x4 and it was $150

that sounds pretty good compared to getting a second hand one, specially with syncros and everything

can use the carry all 1st gear for a lower? first gear to off memory.. but that would mean havigna carry all around to pull bits off.. and for the g/f's car.. probably not worth it...

B4T recently rebuilt his g/box.. no dramas from what i recall...

yeh i did this a while back. easy to do but just as easy to mess up. You will meed a decent bearing puller and a big press. Make sure everything goes back together the way it comes apart. Somehow one of the gears in mine got turned around. everything still works like it should but it has a whine. Similar to when in low range 4x4.

Alright I've looked everywhere and I cant find the gaskets that came with the rebuild kit (i bought the kit a couple of months back) I can only find the transfer ones. How does gasket maker (goo) go on transmissions? Is it sufficient or should I really try to track down a gasket set.

my kit didnt have any gaskets just a tube of grey sealant. no leaks so far.

Thanks guys. I guess I've got something to do on the weekend now. Along with my bump stop spacers, new spring hangers, exhaust lift.....why the hell am I working on my missus' car! :lol:

Well its all done and dusted. Anyone thats tossing up whether to try yourtself or not I'd recommend having a crack. I actually found it easier than doing the transfer rebuild. My only complaint would be the lack of needle bearings in my rebuild kit. Strangely it only came with the one for the input shaft I guess this one gets the most wear. No other real complaints but I havent put it behind the engine yet. I did notice that in neutral I can barely turn the input shaft by hand but the output is quite easy to turn. I dont remember if I could turn it easily before pulling it apart. I would have assumed it should spin freely in neutral. I guess I'll find out when I try to put some drive through it. Thanks for the input guys :)

Yeah its coated in a fine brown powder. I believe it was done courtesy of the glasshouse mountains.
