HIDs will also piss off other road users to no end.. Other than for the wank factor you don't need them.. What Rusho suggested is more than enough for most driving. Get some HID spottys if you need them |

Can someone point me in the direction of the ADR or any other relevant publication that states that HID is illegal? There is no comparison between HID and Halogen. A 4300k kit looks like a bright halogen, at 55w. |

the vehicle has to have self levelling head lights in order to run hid.. Its not that they are illegal.. I run 35w 6000k in the mrs honda jazz and they are bright. I plan to run them in the jimny once a bullbar is fitted as at the moment the light is facing sky heigh |

Maybe someone can aim their lights properly with High/Low HID upgrades and Phillips halogens, take a happy snap of light pattern against a wall so all can see the results. I can do halogen lights for a Jimny with upgraded loom and cleaned lens. A how to aim your Jimny lights.

Could be different from state to state, but in QLD they are definately illegal without being factory fitted with a self leveling device. |

I think the next problem is then just because you fit some stuff that should comply to a certain ADR, the vehicle still isnt built and complied to the same ADR so you then have to somehow get it tested First big problem is housings designed to focus the beam from a H4 style globe will be different from that required to focus any kind of HID globe It would be great to see a 7" round system that is fully compliant and perhaps even some kind of projector insert you fit into your existing lights after removing the reflector and then something in the NCOP to have them certified but I dont see anyone having the incentive to push for it |

Speaker do some wicked LED headlights too: http://www.jwspeaker.com/other/led-headlamps I thought I'd go HID, but I'm going to hold out for LED. Much better suited to an off road car. I've had factory HID in my last three road cars and two out of the three cars have had dramas with failure, and that's in "fixed" applications with a separate high beam lamp. I'm not convinced a moving globe/shroud H4 HID arrangement is suited to off road use. Steve. |

i have single beam HIDs in my sierra headlights and they are great but i will go back to a normal h4 globe when i move back to civilization. |

I see they have reference to European and ECE approval, I wonder if its one that we accept for ADR complaince |

Hi guys, In my old 4Runner I replaced the standard Halogens with Phillips 50+ Halogen globes which was a good upgrade, then I changed them to a set of HID's a few months later, and omg!!! They we're so much better. Worked offroad all the time, never had any problems. When I rolled that car I put the HID's in my dads GU Patrol, and I noticed that when you used his halogen spotties, both sort of cancelled each other out. So when I bought my Vit, I bought a set of 45W HID spotties and a set of 55W HID's to replace my standard globes, difference is amazing. Everything is so much clearer and easier to see, and if you aim them right down you won't annoy anyone. But they are illegal, or at least in VIC they are. So my two points are: HID's don't work as well if used with Halogen spotties HID's produce clearer brighter light than anything else currently on the market. Cheers Matty |

For comp work IMO the best set up would be HID inserts and a decent size LED light bar. HID will provide a bit of distance while the Light Bar will throw light absolutely everywhere, great for driving through dense bush that kind of thing not long open roads. |

I have HID's in my jimny with 2 spotties(non-spread) the HID's cover the width on high beam, while the spotties give the distance so i think they balanced each other out rather well JMO. |

thanks for that Moag, once again great pics from the toad hunter
that combo light bar does a bloody good job, decent distance & wicked fill/spread. IMO it's all well & good having spot lights that shine 5000kms down the road, it's not often you really need to use them unless travelling at Mach 10. |
