Post subject:  Vitara auto to manual conversion

Did a bit of a search but didn't come up with anything, just wondering how hard it is to swap to a manual in a Vitara? Looking for a hardtop and the pickings are pretty slim, seem to be a few autos around so I might try this option.

Obviously a donor car is the best bet, what do I need to change?
Is the pedal box different or does it have a hole for the clutch pedal to bolt up to?
Diff gears are different I take it? Are the diffs themselves the same and I can get away with swapping centres?
Much wiring involved? 3 speed is completely hydraulic and 4 speed is electronic from what I can tell?
Are the autos worth anything to the rock crawling Sierra guys?

What auto do you have? 3 or 4 speed?

Sounds like captaindatto doesn't have a car yet.

Is it possible to convert? Sure it is.

Is there any point? No.

Yes, you will need the pedal box, shifter, console, diff gears if it's a 3 speed auto. The carby is also different for the autos. (Might not be an issue) Obviously clutch cable, flywheel, clutch etc.

If it's an EFI car, you don't need diff gears, but I think you'll need driveshafts and a manual gearbox crossmember on top of the other stuff.

I wouldn't buy a carby three speed auto - not enough motor for the car.
I might consider buying a carby manual
I wouldn't hesitate to buy an EFI auto.
There's no reason to buy an EFI manual.

The EFI auto is a nice combination. There is no advantage choosing a manual over it.

Yes there is a market for either auto, but getting all the bits to properly complete a manual swap would best be achieved by buying a whole wrecked manual car.

Hang out for a manual if that's what you really want, but I'd drive an EFI auto before I considered a swap.

Steve.

Naw haven't picked on up yet. Come across a few lately but they all seem to be autos or clapped out. I was mainly thinking quickly ripping a 3 speed out and throwing the box in if a nice one pops up. 4 speed I'd have to have a drive of an decide from there.

Besides, I've changed enough pedal boxes for one lifetime. Two.
