Short and sweet, I can't break in a rebuilt motor on running straight LPG.

I'm hoping someone can lend me a fully working carby for a week (or two, max) so I can switch to petrol for a spell and seat the rings on my inbound G16A. Too pov to buy one just for the job, and my carb ain't a goer.

Looking to do all this in about a months time (at the start of August).

Gimmie a yell if you can help out, i'll sort out a bottle of your favourite juice and say good things about you forever

If its a Sierra carb you are chasing, then probably... You remove and reinstall though ;)

I just had a look and your not actually there. So where you live? I have a 4k carby you could borrow, might be effort to adapt it but?

Cheers Ben that'd be awesome, happy to do all the work - i'll tee up some gaskets and new radiator juice, and even give your car a wash and vacuum :D

Are G13A and G16A fuel pumps and distributors the same?

Hurmmmm that's pretty interesting! Surely there's got to be a way it can be done. Just seems a bit bizarre and a lot of stuffing around having to run in an engine dedicated to LPG on fuel.

Wonder how they do it on fork engines and such.

probably on an engine dyno at the manufacturer's place.

Grabbed from Impco:

Because propane is introduced into the combustion chamber as a dry gas, lubrication on the cylinder walls does not wash away, and the cylinder bore wear is virtually eliminated. In spite of this obvious advantage, propane's gaseous nature is the very reason that rings do not seat in a propane fueled engine. The result is excessive oil consumption.

Oil consumption can be completely eliminated if handled correctly. We advocate the use of either a moly-filled or cast iron top ring. Chrome rings should not be used to unless the engine is first run on gasoline to seat the rings, then converted to propane. Otherwise, the surface of the chrome ring is so hard that it won't seat. A three-piece oil ring with chrome-plated steel rails is preferred for gaseous fuels. It has the ability to scrape oil better than a one-piece ring, and the steel rails conform better to the cylinder walls.

Damn right it's a lot of stuffing around, but don't want to take a chance. On the bright side, once broken in I could get 500K from a motor.

hey tim have you asked if suzistore can chuck a wrecked one in with the engine? then just return it to them once you're done??

otherwise call some carby places around perth - im sure they'll have something in the bin you can use... won't matter if it doesnt have a choke cos youre not running it long term - i'd be inclined with whatever setup you get to just drive to esperance and back over a weekend to get those KM up ASAP and swap back to gas.

when i had mine done we just took my car everywhere for about 2 weeks, 1000km went in no time.

I thought that was written by Impco in like the 80's or something around that era. Still weird how we are in 2011 and no one has a solution of how to run an engine in on LPG with chrome rings.

It says in that statement to run it in on gasoline because 'the surface of the chrome ring is so hard that it won't seat' . So what does gasoline do that LPG can't for these hard rings? All I can think of is that it washes/wets the bores down and maybe acts as a wet abrasive? If so I wonder why you can't feed it a bit of light oil, like a drip feeder into the intake.

Wonder where all the info is at..

Then again Che just spent a heap on this rebuild so why risk it with a wrecked/dodgy carby. It's first few runs are crucial for proper break in and long service life so he must find a very descent carb in perfect working order.

if suzistore built the engine and supplied the carby to break it in then the warranty would extend to that carby also... that was my line of thought anyway =)

It was just your use of 'wrecked one' and 'out of the bin' terms in that paragraph that made it all sound iffy

But you are not using propane you are using LPG which is a blend of propane and butane.

Butane has a gasoues state at around 30 degrees and propane at around -40 degrees

Do some research on LPG not just propane

there are lots of lpg only motors that clock up shitloads of hours without issue.

i am sure that 1.3 dizzy's will fit a 1.6 and work however a 1.6 wont fit a 1.3.
fuel pumps are different.

Kinda been doing that buddy, the differences are well understood. I use propane as a reference fuel as there's not one page on the entire internet with an LPG specific breaking in guide. Seeing LPG is (supposed to be) 80% propane it's the most relevant info I can find.

I've joined a couple of engineering forums and the only LPG forum available to find a concrete answer on LPG and ring seating, gone to my local Ford dealership for a chat to the mechanic, but the outcomes are all over the shop. Until I find the golden egg i'll be playing it safe and breaking in on petrol.

Awesome, easier than pulling of Ben's beast, i'll get back to ya in a week or so when I put money down on the engine.

Legends 8) Thanks for the offers Mick and Ben

Haha, caught out :P

OK, I have linked thsi before in my "che's rebuild" thread, but apart from this and the Impco guide there's bugger all reliable/reputable info.

Unfortunately the info contradicts each source... and who do you trust more - engine builders or parts designers? I don't bloody know
