So I'm just preping stuff to put a chinasoong locker in my front diff, sv420.

I'm looking at the SQ420 FSM about how to remove the 3rd. I've only done RWD diffs before.

First step being to remove the drive shaft. Ok, cool, that's just like the axels in a rear. But then it doesn't say anything about the other side? From that I guess there's nothing there and the CV pulls straight out of the 3rd when you pull the drive shaft out?

Sorry it's probably obvious when you go to do it.

Also I'm assuming that I would do this leaving the diff housing in the car, and I don't have to pull that out first?

the LHS is unbolt the 3 bolts on the CV flange & move the CV out of the way & knock the LHS axle out.

to get the RHS out you need to jack the RHS, remove FWH & circlip, wheel, unbolt the strut from the knuckle & being a SV420 you'll need to separate the RHS ball joint from the knuckle to be able to swing/roll the hub/disk/knuckle forward enough to get the stub axle out of the diff housing.

IMO you're mad if you're putting a locker into an alloy housing.

EDTI: I'm pretty sure you can't physically fit the 3rd into the housing with it installed.

So your saying I need to go find one of those elusive steel housings hey. Buggar. Oh well.

Will the RD88 fit in the steel housing?

So this is going to add about an extra $1k to the price yeah? (or was someone being ripped off, I saw this in a thread a while ago.)

Steel 3rd member is the more important of the two. Ideally you'd just grab both at the same time but if money is tight just go with the 3rd member for the time being. Then its a simple change later down the track to swap the housing over. I'm still running the alloy housing with the GV 3rd member and have had no problems at all thus far (touch wood )

Regarding price, last time I checked they could be had for about $250+ each (so $500 total) from the bigger/better wreckers *if* you manage to find one. And yep, I had more than one quote for over a grand so there are some dreamers out there.

My steel front diff/axle housing was only $380 from a wrecker in Maroochydore QLD. Delivery was another $80 to Melbourne.
Use online parts locators,
wreckers that are not zook specific charge more reasonable amounts.
