Yes but gearing options aren't as good as the lux diffs. |

i doubt you will break a longfield just with the 1.3 It can be done obviously, but you would have to be flogging the crapper out of it at full lock binded up etc. Hilux diffs will be plenty strong enough for 37's. Alot of comp hilux's run 40's and bigger motors and they are fine. |

don't you need a bundera rear to make it work? |

The bundera lines up better so will have better driveshaft angle and in turn less prone to vibrations. Is this for a rego/road car or trail only? |

Look at 60 series diffs. Nice and strong and available. Good aftermarket options as well. Dont bother with Nissan stuff. More $ to have built up and not as strong. |

I have lux diffs on the road and the drive line would be a he'll of a lot better if the diff center lined up. The ratio is a 4.3 center, with the 1.3 transfer with no gears and 33s it is good and drivable for a daily on the road but a comp rig I would be chasing 5.1 diff center |

Look for the diffs where the front has bracing, not sure what year, might be late 80s early 90s? and get 5.29 diff ratio |

The higher ratio you go the smaller your diff pinion is = weaker diff 4.88 and 6.5 transfer is enough for 37 inch tyres in any scenario. Too much even if your not doing rocks. |

Dont bother with Nissan stuff. More $ to have built up and not as strong. Wrong an wrong 60 series and Hilux use the same cv joints Patrol diffs have always been known to be stronger than Landcruiser There will be more aftermarket stuff for the Landcruiser stuff but that is because they require more beefing, oh and the fact that the Patrol was never available in the states |

Not wrong Didnt say that hilux and 60's use different CV's?? I know they are the same. Yes GU diffs may be stronger out of the box? So what? Its pretty marginal anyway from what ive read. They are still not strong enough for comp work. Throw some chromo into your GU diffs = $1800, chromo hubs = $400+ Landcruiser/Hilux stuff can be built stronger and for less than half the price. Around $800 will get you Longfileds with warranty. GU stuff no warranty and not as strong. |

Is the pinion size pretty marginal too? How many people have broken them? I honestly don't know, but when i looked at my 5.29 gears, they looked the same as 4.88. |

OK so why would YOU (not ment to be rude, just a question directed at your opinion) not stick with the hilux diffs canberramav wrote: i doubt you will break a longfield just with the 1.3
It can be done obviously, but you would have to be flogging the crapper out of it at full lock binded up etc. Hilux diffs will be plenty strong enough for 37's. Alot of comp hilux's run 40's and bigger motors and they are fine. plus's that I see. Very cheap to buy and most likley have 4.88 ratios, better ground clearance, cheap Longfields etc.. you can buy kits to fit into the sierra (for those umong us how like to talk the talk but not walk the walk..) Minus's Its not suzuki stuff and that is frowned apon by many on this forum And on the Toyota v Nissan axle debate. in stock form Nissan is stronger.... marginal or not and we are talking in this instance of a 1.3L engine |

I would just stick with the Hilux diffs. They are fine. I recommended he look at the 60's before he mentioned he can get the hilux ones cheap. 60's put the rear diff in a better position though unless you get a bundera diff. A 1.3 engine will bust stock GU stuff no worries at all. Especially with 37' stickies. (In a comp or similar terrain) Generally with the stuff we drive to put into perspective.......We put a standard 60 CV in one of our zooks and it lasted 10 minutes. We had previoulsy been driving all day with the longfield. |

Steve I ran 5.29 in my 60 diffs and they were fine. I just think for the 37 tyres you only need to run a 4.88 |

Rock crawling I presume? not much of that goes on down this way My Hilux diff has been fine for the last 7 years, mine spec cv's tough and my patrol's front end is still fine, time will tell though i suppose. Like I said not much "rock crawling" going on down this way. Would love to get your way for a bit and check out what happens |

I would go Lux diffs over Patrols because they are easier and cheaper on aftermarket parts, when you start looking at comps and sticky tyres. 4.88 came out in the petrol luxs in all years, I think. 4.88's and the 6.5 should be fine for the setup you currently have. If you are looking at upgrading or seriously comping it I would look for a diesel or surf diff, 4.5, 4.1 etc as you can then run aftermarket 5.29's in them which are no weaker then the stock lower numbered gears. The stock 4.8's and stock 5.29's run a thinner/weaker ring gear and more centred pinion then the aftermarket gears which is why you cant fit the aftermarket ones in those centres. Are there enough comps in WA to take a car off the road for? Do you have access to lots of private property? It gets pretty boring to have a very capable car you can only drive for a few hours a year because it can only be driven on comps. Just a thought. A less capable car you can drive more is heaps more fun than a trail car that's sitting in the shed. Steve. |
