If its gotten worse with the cold weather id be having a look at the choke setup. There are 3 parts to the choke setup id be looking at:
1. Check that the choke is closing fully when cold.
2. Check that the choke is opening up a little when the car starts, this is controlled by a vacuum activated lever on the firewall side of the carb. When the car start and creates a vacuum the lever pulls the choke open a little.
3. Adjust the throttle up screw adjust on the choke. This hold the throttle on abit more then normal untill the choke opens up. The adjustment screw is on the front of the carb. You will need to pull the throttle wide open to access the screw.
Have a look/play with these and see how you go. You will need to take the top hat off to see whats going on. id be having a look at point 2 first.

Recently my Sierra is getting worse and worse to drive. It has a few small problems that I never had with the old EFI vitara. For starters, it will never idle at cold. I have to prime the engine with a few pumps of the accelerator and it'll take a bit to crank over. It then will crank over and die without holding the revvs up. Then, I have to drive it with the revs up. Whenever I change down gears (clutch in) the revs will die and the engine will stall. It also miss fires and carries on But occasionally it will come good and will idle where I've set it with the timing light. I've had the timing light on it and set it all when it was idling good. Also replaced spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap and button. Looking for advice on what it could be or where to start.

Just to note, I think it's also done a head gasket as it's using a lot of water and oil.

I ran carby cleaner through it a few weeks ago. Might give the ole lebo tune another go.

Hmm, seems the butterfly just under the hat isn't opening enough and causing it to run like crap. It seems as though the spring that adjusts it isn't that tight on the nylon thing either. If I cable tie it open, what problems might I cause.

Thats for the choke. it blocks more air off while the motor is cold making the car run rich untill the motor warms up. The butterfly should open automatically as the car warms up. Have a look at the vacuum activated lever on the firewall side. the butterfly should be fully shut with the motor off, when the motor starts the lever should open it about 3mm or so. Then as the car warms it will open the rest of the way. It might need a bit of a lube.

The choke butterfly should be fully open when the engine is hot. It is operated by a wax pellet that expands when it gets hot(heated by water from the cooling system). There is an adjustment screw just to the right and below (looking backwards) of the small white nylon gear. It has a lock nut that you need to loosen, then adjust the centre screw just enough to make the choke plate open fully. Hope this helps.
