Gents, A jimny fully loaded with passengers and Luggage is about 1250kg mximum. This is about 2755Lbs SO what rating Winch would you get? At my local 4x4 shop they were trying to sell me a 10,000lbs winch and I just can't figure why I need 10,000lbs of pressure to roll 2755 sideways out of some mud or up a steep incline. How do they actually figure that I'm going to need a winch that big?!? Am I missing something? |

Honestly you would get away with a 6000lb. But if you are worried, just get an 8000lb. |

X2 I think i heard once to look at a winch thats rated at twice the loaded weight of the car. Also look at the size of the physical size winch and weight, eg getting a winch with rope instead of cable means less weight hanging off the front of the Jimmny. |

I'm just worride about throwing my money down the toilet. I'm glad you guys agree that 10,000lbs is over kill. Actually I've been looking at the 3000lbs winches on ebay, but I'll take your advice and go for a 6,000lbs. I also want rope, I'm scared of cable! too many stories about impatient people loosing heads, fingers and hands and stuff. I'm very impatient with equipment sometimes. |

Think of it as how much force you need to pull ur self out of mud If your really stuck it could be double your car weight to try pull you out That's how I look at it |

6000lb with synthetic rope. With the rope on the 6000 would probably cost you as much as the 10000lb would cost without it. |

Didn't Moph try confuse us all in another thread with the basic maths of whats involved in recovery's? or was that just with snatch's? I cant find it. Thats super cheap BucketLoad! I might have a winch sooner than expected. oh and on top of the winch make sure you know how to use it, there's a little more to winding it in and out |

Breaking static mass would be the correct description on that box. Breaking force/load/strength indicates an action in kN. Breaking strain indicates the % elongation at which it would break. Neither is correct when the value has units 'kg' - which is a measure of mass. Note that mass is measured in kg ... weight is a force and is measured in kN. A chunk of lead with mass 1kg weighs 9.81N on earth but about 1.64N on the moon. If the strap has breaking static mass of 5000kg then that's a 49.0kN force, as acceleration due to gravity is 9.81ms-2. Force (kN) = mass (kg) x acceleration (ms-2). With respect to working out whether a strap will break during a recovery, it's almost impossible. Let's say you have a 1000kg Zook bogged to the axles: Unknown One... ...is the equivalent static mass (kg) required to overcome ground suction and pull the vehicle back up onto firm ground. Imagine you have a simple pulley fixed in space out in front of the car ... line runs from front of car, over pulley, down towards ground and has a big weight hanging from the end of it. The weight required to pull the car along slightly is the mass 'm' required. Unknown Two... ...is the rate of deceleration - ie how quick is the relative deceleration between the two vehicles between the instant that the snatch loads up to the instant that it reaches full extension. Obviously impossible to estimate accurately as you need to know (1) speed of snatcher vehicle at time of snatch loading, (2) time between snatch loading up and snatch reaching full extension and (3) whether the snatchee vehicle moves at all between snatch loading and snatch reaching full extension. Pretty darn difficult to estimate accurately. The easy way out for the manufacturer is to issue a static breaking mass - hang the snatch from the ceiling, add weights, record mass at which it fails. This can easily be converted to a static breaking weight (kN) but still tells you nothing about the real-world conditions under which it will fail, which is what you'd need to know to issue a SWL (safe working load) or similar rating. I just brought a 9000lb tigerz 11 winch of dank for my jimny! The way i look at it, is i can pull a slighter larger 4wd out of the shit, with the 9000lb winch, instead of using s snatch strap, plus nothing like a bit of over kill |

random youtubing THIS i know '0' about winching but i would of thought there would of been some technique or method that was a little more appropriate for the problem? |

which is great until you pull the front end of your car off pulling a pootrol out of the mud. or simply drag your car forward toward the bogged car coz you car weighs next to nothing |

Take into account the line pull drops each wrap on the drum. I have it on a sticker on my winch. Don't know exact off the top of my head but a 9000lb ends up with only about 5000lb on the 4th wrap. |

and cant you use pulleys n shit to give you better pulling advantage? and a 2 tonne car wouldnt need 2 tonne lifting power, unless your planning on winching it up in the air |
