Post subject:  carb idle probs.... checked search and have a few more q's

g13ba sierra

so on the drive home about the 1700 km point, i pulled over for a piss brake, and the car wouldnt idle below 2500rpm.

so at the end of the day i popped the bonnet and had a tinker, found the accelerator cable to be pretty slack, so i adjusted it a bit and didnt change, i wasnt going to be doing much idling so i put it into the "fix when home basket" ((basket now full))

now ive had a look and did a quick search here, i wound the idle screw out till it fell out, still 'idles' at 2500.
checked the coolant hoses to the carby were hot and they were (so i believe they arent blocked)

than i had a closer look, the choke cable is disconnected, so i dont believe the choke is stuck on,
than i played with the linkages, a bit sloppy, and the "return spring" thing has brokn off and gone missing. its the one that goes from the part where the cable goes onto, like a return spring, could that be the problem, when i force the part with the accelerator cable all the way in it idles better, but stilll high and i dont reckon a small spring would have enough force to bring it back as far as i have too to make an effect.

and the linkage on top of the carby, looks like a plunger like piece has come apart, is for the choke or what? if i hook it bacj up will it fix it or is this for the choke?

any other help would be great.
cheers

carby cleaned it!? blasted out the idle jet? more than likely gunked up.. a fuel filter under the bonnet, just before it reaches the carb. is a good idea to try and catch any loose crap that may cause it to block in the future...

i will hit it with some carby cleaner, it has a filter at the back of the cab after the fule tank, its pretty clean after 12000 km in 4 weeks.

make sure you get right into the jets , to much is going to be better than to little ;) and Add another filter.... under the bonnet... better safe than sorry...

do i need to strip down the carby at all to get right into them or just spray it down the 'throat'?
what avout that liinkage on top?
is that a drama or is that just the choke setup?
thanks for ya help.

I didnt tear mine down, but since replaced the original carb, with a 4k n never had the issue again..

A quick search popped this answer up thou..

Sounds like your choke might be stuck on. Ensure the radiator is topped up and check that the 2 small coolant hoses on the carby are getting warm as the engine gets warm. Might be worth pulling them off and blowing a bit of compressed air through the fittings on the carby to make sure water flows through ok. They have a habit of getting blocked up with crap over a few years of use[/quote]

could be an underlying issue also..

what DOES help, is when you do get it sorted.. post up what the issue actually was!! putting IDLE into the search gave 20+ pages of results, and without looking thru them all, I reckon at least 3/4 of them would not have the original poster follow up on what the issue was..

yeah thats the thread i read and checked the hoses, they became warm with the engine, but i will pull them off and throw some air down them while im at it.

pull the vacuum hoses off the one or two actuators on the front of the carby and plug them and see if it changes

have a look at the choke mech on the back and side and you should be able to see the bit near the main throttle linkage the cable attaches to that will move and push against an upside down adjuster screw on the main linkage that you can only adjust with the throttle wide open, that screw shouldnt be touching a stopper at hot idle, only cold
