Done a leakdown test on the weekend with shocking results. No. 1 cylinder was blowing air through No. 2 as fast as I could put it in. I'm amazed it even ran like this! The temp was getting hotter than normal but not past half way and power was down somewhat. Now I've pulled the head and found my g16a has g16b pistons?! 4 valve reliefs per piston. I take this won't be an issue? Odd though. Thoughts? I am taking the head in to be skimmed and have the valves done aswell as stem seals replaced. Is there anything else I should do to the head whilst it's out? |

Sounds like you have a 8v head on a 16v bottom end. As long as the valves aren't hitting the pistons I think you should be OK. The only difference then would be the volume of the 16v piston would most likely be slightly different to that of an 8v piston, which would affect your compression ratio. My guess is that the affect would be negligible. Getting the head machined will get it flat but it's only half the story. If the other mating surface eg. the block, is not right you still wont get a good seal. The FSM details how to test it, you'll need a good straight edge and feeler gauges. |

Many of the G16a engines came out with 4 valve pistons, It was like suzuki had plans for the efi and didn't want to make any more 2 valve pistons. There is no problem with it at all. Norm when air flows from cyl 1 to cyl 2 its a gasket issue caused by pinging or the vehicle being too lean. Get the head faced and pressure tested, May pay to run a stone over the block to ensure its level if it has done a gasket. If the block is too far gone will need to remove it and have it decked or the problem will reoccur. Make sure they double check the valve guides for wear, have had a couple of machine shops tell me there ok, but when placing the heads back on having burning oil issues on start up or after long idle |

After much consideration I have started pulling the rest of the engine for a full reco. I will be taking it to a reputable engine rebuilder here in Bendigo. He said he can recondition the engine for $1600. Sound fair? |

Cost me $1000 to have my old 1.6 reco'd a couple of years back. If I recall correctly, $400 for head and $600 for block. |

I blew a head gasket on my 92 Vit G16B and found out that the previous owner only had the head redone 9 months ago! Must have used same head bolts or a shit quality gasket. What a waste of time and money. Anyways, the motor had 270000kms on it and at $1200 to repair head again, I decided to buy a jap import G16B with 70000kms for $1300. G16B's are prone to cracking blocks also so this was another reason I went with a lower Kms motor. No point in having a new head on a block that has done 270000kms and may have been cracked even though I am sure the block was fine. As an added bonus, the jap motor came complete with all accessories so now I have a spare AC comp, PS pump, alternator, starter motor etc and I still have my old motor which I may repair further down the track or use for a future project. |
