Post subject:  Sierra carb trouble?
I seem to have a problem when offroad. doesnt happen just cruising around town but when ive been on the beach and also in the bush, it starts to have trouble where it has a dead spot with small throttle openings. it will move with bearly any throttle, push the throttle slightly more and it wants to stall, push a bit further and it comes to life and drives fine. anybody know what the hell is going on here?

This sometimes starts within a few hundred meters of hitting the dirt, sometimes i can go half a hour or more before it comes up, and once i let the car sit for a while and then drive again it seems fine..

Normal, keep your revs up, soft stuff, above 3,000rpm.

Wouldn't call having a flat spot at small throttle openings normal.
How many k's has the vehicle done and when was the last time the carb was overhauled or fuel pump changed?

JR, I have had it with useless aisin carbs, as much as I try to get rid of the flat spot on my stocker, the more i find that it is somewhat normal, aisins have a tendency to get flat as they age, maybe a competent rebuilder, if there is such a thing for such an insanely complicated carby, could get rid of it, but for the average bloke, fuck it, live with it.

Personally I believe it to be the power valve.

I have tried and tried, always have done my own tuning, even rebuilding carbs, fixing leaky butterfly valve stems, but this one has me, too complicated by far.

If it gets me down, new carby, I can live with it.

For the price of a competent rebuilder, get a new, better carby, or like most say, go injection.

This deffinetly doesnt seem 'normal' if i keep it above 3k, how do i work around steep rocky stuff offroad where i wanna be crawling along?

Its done 195k, and i have only owned it a month or so, i have no idea when these were last done. this problem had only happend the last 2 weekends...

Have you played with and modified the accelerator pump arm before?

It's NOT normal. If the accelerator pump it set up and working properly you won't have a flat spot at all.

Light throttle dead spot, not flat, DEAD. Idles fine, but wants to die unless i really give it quite alot of throttle. Only seems to happen offroad, and now thinking it only happens when i hit some water

I saw him out and about the other weekend in Killingworth. Deepest i'd say around there if you're sensible is 31" deep?

Nothing too deep at all, even just shallow puddles splashing up, now im not so sure the water is a problem, its just randomly coming and going away. Will speak to my mechanic tomorrow. See if he has any ideas
