| Post subject: | ultimate transfer strength |
Hi guys I am up to the stage of mounting the sierra case in the lj buggy and would like to know what are the best ways to upgrade the transfer case to handle the abuse of competition with 40 inch tyres. The buggy will hopefully be under 1200kg and is powered by a g16b and 4 speed auto and I plan to fit 6.5 gears to the transfer.I am making a reinforced cradle that picks up all except 2 of the case bolts and the front input housing bolts. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas please let me know thankyou troopy |

Got the perfect sollution for you. Sell it and run a GQ case as a divorced unit with crawler gears. You'll struggle to keep the little sierra case together |

Thanks I have to say that is not what I was hoping to hear but yeah I might be asking just a bit too much of the sierra case. My current zook runs twin patrol transfers with standard gears and has been very reliable but very heavy and would a patrol case with 88% reduction gears actually be low enough with the lower torque of the 1.6 ? |

40's is pretty big, i think there are a few tough trucks with 37's with stock reinforced transfers. rhetts? Next bet would be vitara or more aftermarket parts avaliable the common hilux. Very similar sizing. Im not sure how big the patrols are, my guess is huge? |

I think even running a hilux transfer with a divorcing kit I would still need to upgrade the outputs and it is still only able to get 4.7 gears and with the 1:1 high range it would struggle. |

seriously mate have a good look on lowrangeoffroad they have a bunch of things to make your 1.6 match up to a hilux 5 speed and then twin transfers if u have the money cos that shits expensive. would love to do something extreme like that with my 87 lwb sierra. |

I was really hoping to get away from running twins again and it still leaves me with the 1:1 high range, plus I already have the 6.5 gears in a case waiting and would like to keep the aw4 auto as they are supposed to be bullet proof. |

If its only a buggy why are you worried about high range? High diff gears will help also. aw4 to lux single transfer with trailgear 4.7? |

http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.ph ... egory/109/ Review: Very easy install... great value to get those DEEP trail gears you need. I run this gear set along with the T case doubler in my Buggy.. Been running it for 3 years, 39.5 in tires, 5.29 diffs, lockers.. Rock crawling in New England... No Problems ever. Building another truck right now for Street and Trail... Will be installing this set and the doubler in it as well |

I want the high range to still be usable as we do higher speed sections in some comps and with an offroad permit we can drive buggies on some beaches and public offroad areas. My daily zook runs 32's with a 1.6 and the 6.5 gears in the transfer and I think it would struggle with less reduction on 40's. If there was a lower gearing set for the hilux case I would go that option but not duals as I want to keep this thing light with a short as possible drivetrain. |

cause in wa we like to drive fast, u could always get the 8.8 reduction gears, but your running 60 series diffs so change the ratio is them to like a 4.88 and then run something like 5.12 in the case, wouldn give a perfect low range but would keep some strength in it, Patrol cases are huge |

Seeing as you've got it, run the 6.5 case. Autos are much softer on drivelines, I doubt soft enough but hey, you never know! Unless you have an alternate use for the 6.5 case there's really not much to lose. |

G13BB into sierra 5sp to 2:1? custom planetary box to GQ transfer with 4.7 gears I believe. Personally I think it could have done with a little less gearing at times, but with the little G13BB that would not have worked. Still, a mighty impressive combination |

That is alot to pack into a lj and still a fairly long drivetrain, both of the patrol cases combined in my sierra buggy are over 100kgs and impossible to remove without help oh and it does over 100kph in single low so I do like the buzz of going fast sometimes |

I would just stick with the Sierra case and see how you go. I did blow mine up but it was over 5 years old and im not sure on the install quality etc. They were calmini gears i think. Rob has flogged the crapper out of his zook on 37 treps. Never had a problem. He has actually broken a longfield and still had no other driveline problems. The auto will soak up alot of your driveline stress. |

I should mention Rob's gears are 6 years old. Have been in prob 5 x Willowglen Nissan trials Toperi x 3 Tough truck x 2 And many drunken night drives. (This is the hardest on the driveline) |

Going the same way Troopy 6.4s new front out put shaft Rocktoy ring and a cradle . Rhett runs 40s and gives it a flogging and his is manual he did break a case at last years Tuff Truck but would think that gear set had seen a lot of abuse before it broke. Duncan |

I have looked at the various cradles and are building my own that picks up the case at more points and gives me more underbelly clearance and will be mounted to the chassis in 4 places instead of 3 |

What about an atlas? Bit $$$ though |
|
| Author: | troopy [ Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:04 pm ] |
| Post subject: | Re: ultimate transfer strength |
An atlas would be the ultimate as long as it could be optioned with a 1:1.5 ratio high range and would give me front and rear disconnects. The other option would be to use a lt230 as I think these had a reduced ratio high range and crawler gears as low as 5:1 are available or the dream setup would be the atlas and a set of portals |

I think that's the answer rather than trying to get a Sierra case work with so much torque/load going through it. LT230's can be set up divorced. Steve. |
