Was mucking around with timing today and checked mechanical advance, but it was only advancing to about 20 degrees. Is this normal? If it helps, base timing is set to 12/13. |

How far do you think it will need to be advanced?? 20 is shit loads. Doubt you would any more than 15....ever |

Been learning a bit about this sort of thing at my mechanic course recently and apparently mechanical advance usually advances the timing to about 30-40 degrees when revved hard. |

I'd be curious on this one as well... In my datsun days I was taught to set the base timing to get the car running, and then depending on the cam hold the rev's at 3k and set the timing there. (not the typical ping method thats thrown around here but to a set value) I never really understood the specifics of it so can't explain why, but the older blokes that could actually tune a car did it this way and it made my car much much more driveable. |

I just set mine to 8 degrees at idle with vacumn hoses off and blocked. It seems to advance somewhere into the 30's when revved. Maybe you have a leak somewhere? Oh and mine is a corolla motor so 8 degrees may not be idle advance for Suzuki motor. |

Most cars have static timing set somewhere between 8 & 12 degrees BTDC Mechanical and/or vacuum advance takes it to about 34 degrees total. |

The reason i ask is my G13 (1324cc) is currantly set at 16-18 advanced at idle (vac disconected). I can't remember what total advance i'm getting, but it would be over 34'. I get no pinging, even the odd times it gets 91 put in it. I assume i may have an underlying problem |

When I first got mine going I just sort of guessed the timing without a light it was enough to get it going and it was allright but when I put a light on it it's base advance was like 40 degrees. Didn't get any pinging or anything but I think it went better once timed correctly. |

Yeah, no overheating problems at all, even when pushed hard up the biggest of hills. Checked cam timing, compression, vac advance. Checked TDC mark is actually true TDC. Changed plugs , leads, cap and rotor. Can't remember what actual mechanical advance i was getting, but 20deg rings a bell, would have to check it again to be sure. Plan on going to G16 at a later date, so may just leave it as it is for now. |

Plan on going to G16 at a later date, so may just leave it as it is for now. How about you start your own thread instead of crapping on in mine? |

Much easier if your timing light has an advance knob on it, otherwise you can retard the inital timing to 0 for the purpose of the test, and use the factory timing marks to check. |

I searched for a while and didn't come up with anything concrete. My dissy looks and feels fine and in my crapping on, you will notice that i'm getting around 20' of mechanical advance from it which dosn't appear to be enough (in my motor anyway). You would appear to be getting only about 8' advance, so you have a problem. What the actual factory figure is i don't know, but would like to. |
