Going to mount a spotlight on top of my rear Tyre Carrier, going to wire it into the reverse light so that I can see where I'm going when reversing out in the woods off roading at night.

Obviously wired into the reverse light it will be a full time second high level reverse light. Does anyone know if this is alright from the RTA/coppers persepective? they do get a bit fussy about unimportant stuff like this don't they!

you would be better off wiring it seperatly.

so you can flick the switch and have it turn on when your wheeling

The RTA guidlines on light vehicle modification just says that additional lighting example, driving, fog lights are ownere certified mods.

Says that indicators have to go in a specific place, but nothing else in there about lights. Seems ok to me I think.

Yeah, but I like the way I want to do it. Is it legal is the question.

(Same with my front spot lights, I'm just going to wire them into high beam via a relay. Can't think of any reason why I would ever want them on without having my high beam on at the same time.)

I have mine hooked up to a switch on the dash and the reverse switch. When I'm off road I flick the dash switch on an leave it on, then when I engage reverse the light comes on.

You must wire in a switch so it can be isolated from the reverse circuit. Not only that but reverse lights must be of a certain watt, and a spot is alot more than 5 watts so that would make it illegal also. This mod is an ADR thing, not a state to state thing.

Just add a switch into the dash. You'll find it less embarrassing in car parks.
I've got a 55 watt work light that operates off the reverse wiring, with a switch in the +12 line. Works well.

Don't forget to use a relay.

Okay, I can see I'm going to have to wire some switches in. I really couldn't be bothered but it's just another job on my list!

when I did my blue slip cause (nsw) they told us that it must be wired into the revers light switch if it can be turned on independently it will fail and the spot light switch must pick power up from the hi beams

Awesome! Thanks. I suspected it had to be wired into high beam and reverse, but I had no idea that the switch was mandatory. Thanks matey.

cheers, I'll swap the bulb for a 55 watt. Regarding the relay, - is this neccesary for one 55 watt bulb? I don't want to wire all the way back to battery for the reverse light, I was hoping the existing reverse light wiring could handle it.

Does anyone know where the factory fog light wiring is? I assume one end is in the engine bay and the other end is in the dash? Any help where it is? Want to use it for my spot light switch.

If the reverse lights are wired imdependently can't you call them rear work lights? Or do you need a switch at the light themselves to be classified as work lights?

yeah but they will have to be wired so that they only work in neutral I suspect.

I tried it first without the relay, but a bit of searching here
and I found some people burnt out their reverse switches.

I've found it to be much brighter with the relay as the stock reverse wires are very thin.
The direct connection makes it easy to add a switch.

have a look here http://www.auszookers.com/index.php?nam ... erse+light

Well that sucks.

My light has a 3 way switch so can operate from reverse, Off, on (independent but only with the ignition switch)... and I need to get a blue slip in the next couple of months.

Dank Sells an awsome LED one.

He has it on the back of his car, and this is why its bad to be behind him when wheeling as his zuk is auto and every time he goes from park to drive you get blinded.

If your using spotties, or any high wattage reverse light, Use a seperate relay!!!! You will blow your reverse switch in the gbox. I have done it with 2 mini driving lights as reverse lights.. Use the reverse signal as a switch only on the relay. Then use a dash switch if its an additional light.

Image

Cops never picked on these and they were super bright, good for parking everywhere and people can actually see that your reversing and stop.

Not sure how they would go with pinkslips though...

When i 1st regoed my zook, the guy said he could (but didn't) knock it because of the small (3") 55w work light i hooked up as a reverse light. Interestingly, he said a reverse light wasn't nesessary for rego, but if fitted must work.

Run a relay so the reverse light is the switch. And have an in cab switch so you can turn it off.

funny thing is for a blue slip you must have working reverse light but not for a pink slip

i used a house downlight, just hole-sawed into the plastic bumper and stuck the light holder/surround thing in, then put the downlight in.
i wired it up to a relay triggered off my reverse lights and powered from a smallish cable off my sub amp power.

its pretty bright, has good spread, its a sealed bulb and i can easily change it if it dies :)

it only took about 20 mins too
