Who is running 4.9s?

I'm considering those for a mate's zook at the moment.

Yeah I have them. Used to be quiet in high (always noisy in 4th gear low, I don't use 5th). Something has been getting noisy for the last few months, but I think its the 5 speed slowly dying.... :?

I've done the numbers and I think they'll work, but haven't heard anything based on experience. Do you think they are a good match for 31s + 3.7 (WT) diff gears?

Not quite (though its works well enough). Thats what mine was until last year. Since then I changed to 3.9 diffs. The difference offroad cannot even be noticed (ie none), but onroad it holds gears a bit better (mainly 4th on those annoying 50km/h streets). I think if they were not interested in changing to 3.9 diffs, I'd go with the 5.1 transfer gears. Roughly 5.1's with 3.7s is the same as 4.9's with 3.9s (in both high and low).

These and 4:16's are historically (here local) a quiet gearset.

A 4:9 case is 16% reduction in high range so it should be decent for 31's., As Highway-Star said, a little bit lower diff gear would fine tune it for you and give you more umph on the freeway.

I ran a 4:1 case with 33's and it was on the border of not enough power. I added 4:30's from a vitara and it was a pot on balance for RPM's VS power.

Agreeing with Highway-Star again, the 5:1 case with no diff gears has been a great gearset for 31-33's (33 with a 1.6).

I know the 6:5 cases have a great warranty, and bang for buck, but because of the noise, high RPM, and the torque it puts in one spot, we try to avoid them if we can.

What engine do you have?

High-way Star, what are your RPM's like at cruise speed?

This thing will have a 16v 1600 with extractors & 2" system. I am sure it will push along OK with either, the fact that the 4.9 are about $100 cheaper means we will probably go with those.

I had 4.9s in mine and really liked them too.

I did have 3.9 diffs too but cannot see that they make too much difference.

I have the trail tough 4.9s and 4.57 diff gears on 34s. Good and strong no problems at all over a number of years

If its for that Frankenstein zuk your mate would be happy with either 4.1's or 4.9's. Both in high range should push the revs up around ~3400 in 5th at a true 100 which is getting into the sweet spot of the g16.
