| Post subject: | sierra softtop roof rack |
so im looking to build a roof rack for my SWB sierra soft top (has a fibreglass top on) atm the plan is to build a simple section that is just flat with small side bars, this will bolt to the car by a three bar running to the top door hinge, one with the b pillar and one at the rear both attached via sandwich plates just bellow the hard top on the tub.
a quick paint of what i am thinking of (note not my zook just a random from google) i am looking to carry a double swag, shovel, camp chair and a little fire wood. i am not looking to do a "heavy duty roofrack"/exo cage set up, mainly for the legalities of them here in the NT a few questions -what is better ally or steel? -will the sandwich plate idea be strong enough? any suggestion would be appreciated Cheers |

Interested in what you come up with. Also interested in making some sort of roof basket for my LWB soft top Sierra as thinking to upgrade my tent to a Oztent (she who thinks she is obeyed wants a RV5), and at 2m packed length its a bit long for the zook. I was playing with the idea of a bolt on one, with legs that dropped down to the rear bar, front and rear of the side bars/sliders. Made in peices and bolted together so it can be taken on/off as required. |

I am thinking of doing the same for my SWB Vit... chatted to a metal worker today and he said he would be cautious using aluminium unless you insulated it from the body as it could react with the mild steel of the car and cause rust. (In general terms, I can't remember his technical terms). |
