maybe looking at the following;
www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws...TQ:AU:1123
i can get hold of another H20A low K engine for 1650. was thinking while i have the old one out i might build it up in order to turbo or supercharge. has anyone done it with these engines at all. im used to turbo engines but was thinking maybe a 4PSI or so supercharger might be a better option.
any thought ideas and links would be great

Personally, I cannot grasp turbos for a 4wd, you want instant grunt, way down the rev line and up.
Superchargers are the go IMO
Many say that turbos are free power where as mechanical blowers rob power, I have been told that time and time again, utter bullshit.
I want power basically from turnkey. Mechanical blower, not gas driven.

David, you really need to go for a burn in a tweaked modern turbo car.

My old tweaked 3L 2.8 hilux with a ct20 on it was awesome. Made boost from 1300 rpm through to 5500. Full boost (14.5 psi) at like 1900ish

Must admit that that has not happened, turbos and me are strictly diesels, and hearing 4wd way up in the rev band so as to keep power and so motion.
The trouble I know of is if you slip below turbo boost, pretty much instant bog, where the mechanical blower keeps boosting while the engine is running.
I hear engines way up, sounds like 3 or 4,000 revs, and the lil zook I have does it at 12-1500.
These are mostly driven by people that have no 4wd experience, and also tyre pressures to high.

If you are a fabrication geneous you could always make your own inlet manifold and nestle an Eaton M45 between the heads

Don't take a turbo diesel Ford Territory for a drive then... so much turbo lag...

I got a turbo G16B, 115 at the wheels. does my head in lol. expecially with 5.12s got about .001 of a second in first gear ><. I'd personally go for a charger, when I'm out bush as soon as it hits boost up a track it seems to struggle or just launch me lol, better off with power as soon as you put your foot down I reckon. my opinion anyway

Turbos can be set up for low down torque, but unless you are using a twin scroll turbo, top end will suffer for it.
Go for the blower IMO.

Another thing to think about, depending
On what type of 4B your doing, is heat in the
Engine bay, turbos throw out alot of heat
Compared to a sidemount s/c and that
Translates to higher intake temps=
less air higher pressure

its all about getting the right size for the rev range the engine will be working in with turbos. superchargers take abit to run but are making boost at idle

My take on the engine choice.
I'm currently rebuilding a J20A which has a lot of similarity to the H in terms of procedures for tear down and rebuild (well they look like the same pain in the arse things in the manual.)
I was planning a small turbo for it, however this rebuild has almost convinced me not to. The engines in my personal opinion are an absolute pain in the arse to work on once you start pulling things down. Want to change a valve stem seal? Well be prepared to remove everything off the motor, pull the engine out, pull the sump, timing cover and head and then make a special tool to get the valve retainers off. Just for a fucking valve stem seal!
So keep that in mind. I've built turbo conversions before, and generally you accepted that you might damage some part of the engine, particularly while bedding everything down. For these engines expect significant amounts of work for relatively small things if you damage something. This is backed up by the extraordinary quotes I've had for a change over recon engine.

Makes me wonder are there any good small turbo diesels out there that would be a cadidate for a engine transplant?

The new Prado has lag compared to a supercharger. I vote supercharger too! Nice seamless power from a low rev right where you need it and no sudden boast

Yep. Hyundai 1.6CRDi TD I30 motor. Hard to find though, and expect to pay $7-9K for the parts you need. And thats before you start the conversion.

Question is though..... Top mount with a custom manifold? Or side mount with an ass load of plumbing?

You know the I30 was exactly what I was thinking as there just seems to be a lot of them out there now. Maybe in a couple of years once a few more have been writen off? The TDs are fairly new aren't they?

The TD was released a few months after the petrol. So its been around for a couple years now. A friend of a freind has just bought one. Its boosted, chipped and exhausted already. Goes like a standard GT25 skyline

Because since the beginning of time, suzuki has made it their crowning acheivement to fit as many of their vehicle with motors that are too small.
Sierra? Too small. Should be 1.6 EFI
Jimny? Too small. Should be M15a
Vitara? Too small. Should be J20.
SV Vitara? Too small. Should be J24 or H25.
And so on.
