Dont forget superchargers guys. They need a dirty ricer intercoolers too lol. Unless your running low enough boost pressure. Zook Fan the basis of forced induction is to increase the pressire of the inlet air. The higher the pressure, the more oxygen molecules there are to be used in combustion. More oxygen (and more fuel of course) means more power. Of course physics steps in and ruins it. Increasing pressure increases temperature. Hotter intake air leads to all kinds of dramas. So after the air is pressurised it is passed through the intercooler to try to wash off some of this heat energy. The idea is to try and get it at or below room temperature before entering the engine. Because non turbo'd/supercharged engines are taking in uncompressed intake air they are already at room temp. So no need for an intercooler.

As for having them mounted in front as opposed to mounting on top of course it works better. It is in the direct path of the coolest air flow and doesnt have to worry about heat soak from the engine bay, epsecially the top of the engine.

I agree, out front is better. Expect it needs to be recessed so there is a ram air effect. Most guys just have it tacked on the front and cut away bumpers to make it fit, this just adds an extra crumple zone .
Air molecules are lazy, if it is easier to go around something they will. If the intercooler is recessed and ducted then the molecules have no choice but to go through..
