ive developed a rear diff noise in my jimny. at first i thought it was wheel bearings but i put it on some axle stands and put it into 5th and let it idle. the noise is coming from the diff with a light clicking noise every couple of seconds (only could hear the clicking when i was under the car, carnt hear it when in the car driving). the sound is like a worn brake pad scrapping its not really loud but its only been like that for a week. gets louders the faster you go.

i replaced the diff oil the day after i heard the noise, there wasnt any big clumps of steel just the fine metal shavings you get on the drain plug after 20k of driving.

to me it sounds like it could be a bearing gone in the diff or could the clicking noise be the back lash incorrect. i have noticed before the noise occuring that when changing gears there was a tiny clunk (uni's seem to have minimal play in them).

question is whats the problem?
would it be wise to drive to fraser and back in 2 weeks time?
would putting a thicker oil by me a bit more time?

cheers andrew

Hard to say Andrew, if you're sure it's coming from the diff, I'd say pull it and have a look, maybe even take it to a diff shop to have a look at.

no lockers, could the clicking noise be just the open diff as the wheels were off the ground.
