Post subject:  engine paint
chaps i am painting my block after having it cold tanked and decked so it clean, etc. but needs a final go over before painting.

what my question is do i need a special primer due to it being ally or is the normal primer for the enamel the go?(VHT high temp engine enamel from autopro)

Also do I need to do any other special prep before i hit it with the primer again because its ally?

personally after having a paited block i'd leave it bare alloy it's much easier to locate a leak if you ever get one, nothing trying to find the source of an oil leak on a black block.

+ the extra weight of the paint & primer will effect your ET times down the quarter mile.

you will need a high temp etch prime. dunno if such a thing exists, i certainly never came across one when i was playing with paint.

as shep said, i don't think you can get Hi-Temp primer, i'd just hit it with prep-sol/wax n grease remover & hit it with a few light coats.

if you can get some sort of heat into it before, during & after painting it will have a better chance of sticking. if you can make up a small 3 sided spray booth out of carboard & get a blow heater in there to generate some heat.

be warned blow heaters & paint vapours aren't that good for your health + the blow heater will never be the same after.

what colour are you looking at painting it?

with my years of experience as a keyboard warrior/ricer I found go fast red is good for 1/2 a second down the quarter, yellow will bring you max revs up 1500rpm, blue will add torque to the range of 15-20Nm, magenta will attract members of the opposite sex & black will bring the gay.


** graffiti artists spray can trick in cold weather is to heat the cans either with hot water or gently with the heat gun.

Gus cheers mate, I have a heat gun lined up to get some heat in it and i wasn't decided about the colour but since yellow will give me an extra 1500rpm i better go for that, definitely dont want any gays so will avoid the black

paint it in clear coat, it will make us both happy... you get your painted block, i get the raw alloy look. 8)

the only reason i mentioned the clear coat is a mate does some seriously cool wrought iron work & gets all his finished artsy-fartsy type work powder coated in clear & it looks so nice with the depth of the clear on top of the raw metal.

i keep having to tell myself, it's a workhorse not a show car... :wink:

I spent a bit of time with alloy cleaner trying to get the shite shit off my block. In the end I just hit it with a silver coloured heat paint. No flaking etc after a couple of years now.

Maybe glow paint? :lol:

You know white would be cool, real easy to spot leaks, or yellow.

Still just keep bare... its not going to rust after all. (but maybe you have some ideas for you rockin'new valve cover!)

have tossed around the white/yellow idea, maybe with black sump, rocker cover, extractors & intake manifold bit its starting to sound like one of those ideas that seems like a top one when you think it up but in practice actually sux balls

The VHT range of engine hi temp paints do come out very well provided you prepare the surface. I used VHT satin and gloss black on this one:
