Post subject:  Power Steering using Baleno pump + res?

Hi all,

I may be daft with my searching so let me know if I missed it, but I couldn't find whether the stock 2001 Baleno power steering pump would be good enough for a power steering conversion in a Sierra using either a Vitara, Jimny or Cressida power steering box.

I ask because I have the Baleno with power steering already in it and rather than remove it from the motor I might as well use it if it'll be worthwhile.

The other plan is to track down a Sanden SD508 or equivalent to throw an endless air system in while I'm at it, hopefully it can go in place of the stock baleno A/C compressor.

Thanks in advance, let me know if there's already a thread on it.

I'm no expert but have asked similar questions in the past, a baleno will more then likely run a power steering box. Tho a baleno runs a rack and pin from stock, I would say do it. And if you have time, get a pipe bender, bend up some hard lines and then get a shop to put the flexy hose on the ends and make it look super stock :D

Cheers man, I was trying to work out which was harder to run, steering box or rack and pinion.

I don't really want to waste coin on it if it turns out not to work.

I'll have to make sure I don't end up with the wrong hose though eh!

Are you sure it will clear the chassis?

I'm pretty sure we looked at using the Baleno power steer pump/bracketry on the trolley tug and it wouldn't clear the rail.

Could be wrong - just what I seem to recall.

Steve.

NFI and I won't know until I go to bolt it all together!

That's why I thought I'd ask here first.
If that's the case and I get all the gear for it I'll probably fab up some ghetto bracket or something to move the thing to where we need it.

I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I run a Toyota celica pump on my Cressida box.... That's rack and pin I just remembered.... It works really well!

It might work if you make customised bracket for it, editing the the bracket it comes with and mounting it up in the right location to clear the chassis (the mounts further up the engine).

like this (this was a vitara pump on a 1.3)
I made this:

Cut a few bits off the old bracket, drilled a new hole and welded it all together, including a new small tab for the front of the engine.

I did have to trim the bracket for the radiator.

Cool as, well I'll have to track down a power steering box and see if it all fits!

You may notice I went all muti v at the same time, there were lots of options though, barinas and swifts presented lots of options for configuration. Just make sure you get the bits that fit your crank (4 or 5 bolt versions)

I used the water pump and altinator from a GTI and the bottom pully from a Combo Van.

Pump is already on the engine, it's still in the baleno, may need to move the pump to fit the engine in the sierra though.
