Ok... I know nothing about auto boxes and now have a problem


Basically, it will now not shift out of second


So far in an effort to find the problem I have:

* Accessed Suzukiinfo.com and printed the troubleshooting guide

* Checked, drained and refilled the oil (what came out was clean and good)

* Checked the diagnostic codes on the TCM - shows no problem

* Unplugged the TCM and done a "manual drive test" - it still wont go past 2nd.

* Attempted to check the solenoids but the plug is different to the picture so don't know where to put the test wire.


I suspect it is a mechanical problem as the manual drive test fails to get the car into 3rd or OD.

Do any gurus have any more suggestions before I take it to the tranny Dr?

I'm resigned to pulling the box out an am hoping someone tells me not too!

Have you put bigger tyres on it
im a mechanic at a ford dealer yes i guess a suzuki 4speed is different but if people put bigger tyres or even shity tyres the tcm wont let the box shift past 2 or 3d if you have try puttin old tyres back on and see what happens

What?

Can you please explain how that works? and how the TCM knows that you have fitted larger or "shitty" tyres?

Some auto probs can be fixed with it still in car.
So check with auto doc first.
Beyond that I know stuff all.

With the ba's and bf's if The tyre is to big or tread depth to deep the pcm
(powertrain control module) will sense that the tyres are in not right and tell the transmission that they are and it wont change outa 2nd
im not sure how what why it does it it just does had one at work lastweekbut the recomended tyre size on and the car drove sweet

The German made ZF auto is FAR removed from the AW-4 found in a vitara.

Not sure how the ZF determines the wheel size fitted to another component 3 feet away though......

The only way it could tell is if it referenced apparent vehicle speed to GPS speed or something.

DSzuke: When was the last time the gearbox was fully serviced?

Do you have to drop the pan to change the oil? If so, how was the screen?

EThese are pretty sturdy transmissions, my gut tells me solenoid, or solenoid wiring..but that is a shot in the dark without looking at it.

Have been running 31's for many years so unlikely to be a tyre problem.

Last full service... not really sure I have done the oils frequently, but haven't ever pulled the pan and changed the filter. The previous owner did put a (brand new) box in at some stage before I bought the car.


Talked to the transmission guy today. He said to double check my kick down cable (easy done) and pull the pan to see if there are metal bits in the bottom. I'll know then if I need to pull the box for a rebuild or replace.
