Post subject:  Broken Kingpin
Okay so I'm doing my wheel bearings and knuckles and the FIRST one I've started, the lower kingpin is BROKEN.

The actual shaft is separated from the rest of the kingpin unit.

Where am I going to get one of these at short notice? One stop Suzi Shop has closed for the weekend.

I've tried Cheapa Auto Spares (2 stores) and I'm about to ring supercheap, repco and anyone else I can find in the phone book.

Or do I just order one online, put it back together with the old bearing in it and repair it when the new one arrives?

Has anyone else broken one of these? Surely this is part of the reason my steering had a wobble?

I have, i just put the broken one on the bottom and did it up tight, then ordered a new one online, when it was here swapped it out and all is good. Drove on it without any dramas. It had been broken since I've owened the car. only replaced it after i decided to rebuild the wheel bearings plus hubs.

I suppose it won't hurt to throw the new bearing in with the broken pin, it's only a pivot point really after all.

Thanks for confirming what I had already realised was my only option :)

Now to go find out if anything else is shagged that badly!

Oh and did you just replace the kingpin all on it's own, i.e. not pull the whole thing down again to do it?

You should be able to pull just the kingpin to replace.

I should have one at home if you're OK with driving up to Bris. I'm on the South side of the river just near the Gateway bridge.

You just need to undo the 4 bolts holding it in. Pry it out, remove the shims. Then reshim itg according to the FSM and do the 4 bolts back up.

I'll just get one from onestop on monday.

The other problem that I have is that the end of the axle housing is pitted where the swivel hub felt seals wipe. Should I be trying to smooth it out with 1600 grit or similar or just the wire brush.

I'm unsure. Mine were like a rusty thing, I just gave them a good smash with the wire wheel and then rebuilt the hubs and swivels. Doesn't like so must have been alright?

Cool, I've blasted it with the wire wheel, then had a go with 400 which just made it shiny and pitted :roll:

So I fired up the dremel with the little flap wheel I have for it and just polished the front edge, it's definitely smoothed out the pits a bit (which is probably enough) so I guess I'll leave it at that and see how it goes.

Was thinking of throwing a coat of black paint on there to help inhibit any further corrosion but the grease should take care of that!

So I finished washing all the parts and went to put it all back together (only started on the right side) and it turns out that I can't find my tubs of grease...

Tomorrow I'll be grabbing grease for it all and throwing it back together.
