any tricks to getting the axle back in ??? King pin bearings done.... should be the easy bit now (puttin it all back together) but cant get the axle back in????? short side pops straight in......... after fickin with the longside for 2hrs it still wont go in HELP |

Make sure the housing is straight. Keep he diff/third member bolts loose until axles are installed. Turn the knuckle as you are sliding the half shaft in. I usually center the knuckle, let the stub shaft hang down, and then use the stub for leverage to lift the longer part of the axle up a bit. Best advice, walk away and hit it tomorrow. I have messed with one for 2 hours straight, came back in the morning and the first try was a go. |

it's just the way you have to load up the long side axle to get it to slot into the centre. gotta push down on the cv to lift the axle end up into the centre. it's a bit of a fiddle, but not rocket science. |

push the axle in and have the diff centre end pointing slightly up when you feel it hit the 3rd member, twist and push it in. it is the same thing you would do for the rear axles. When you do it once, it is easy ..... |

I usually put a bit of good quality lube on the spline when I put mine back together. Same shit I used to pack my bearings and the like. Never spent more then 5 seconds locating and sliding a axel home. |

take out top king pin,, loosen bottom one,, this allows the whole nuckle to move a bit... slide axle in,, then pull like fuck and slide top king pin back in .. done both my axles (bearing repack)yesterday took about an hour each side on w/t. had the same problem. |

You won't hurt axle splines with a block of wood and tap with a hammer. It shouldn't be necessary though. Neither is loosening 3rd member bolts or loosening the kingpins. I've found pushing down on the CV and sometimes a little turn will have it pop straight in. Doubletoughs are much harder though, as the knuckle has to come off and they are still a really tight fit. Steve. sounds like hes allready got the king pins in,, so im guessing problem is the cv hits and wont go in,,twice iv done mine same problem and each time i took out the top king pin and axle slid straite in. |

All sorted aaaawwwwww yeeeeaaaahhhh.... loosened king pin bolts... gave the housing a little movement... 2 and a half mins later in pops axel... oh.. an bangin on the end wid a block of wood... not a good idea had to file the burrs of the splines befor i could get the hubby bit back on but ..its all done ready for the big trip on weekend anyone know of a south of the river (perth) mechanic who does a good job putting auto lockers in??/ |

He reckons they were great and really cheap. |

Leaving the kingpins loose is always a good idea. The less you have to push, lever and piss fart around getting an axle in will usualy be better on the axle seal. |

If you had the knuckle off why not just put the axle back in before putting the knuckle back on? I am guessing you didn't have the whole knuckle off though so that would answer my question. |

ive only seen it done twice - but the heating of the nut thing was only successful once it got to a dark red colour. but you're right, im better at slinging a knife in the kitchen than a spanner in a workshop =) |
