| Post subject: | Removing Flares -Screws |
I want to remove my flares to do a decent job on painting the sills after removing the crap catching rusting brackets. Having trouble undoing the srews that hold the flare to the bracket. I have lost my impact driver and not having any luck with anything else. Want drilling them out to be the last resort. Any suggestions or should I bite the bulllet and just buy another impact driver? |

I bought one from supa cheap, for a single application and not expecting a hell of a lot, and so far it's stood up to some decent punishment. I fix plant equipment for a living and abuse most of my tools and it's still going strong. |

I think you're not going to have much luck unless you get another impact driver. Even then i'd be suprised if they all come out intact. Some heat may help, so if you have and LPG bottle and a flame torch, or an oxy set that could work for you. I'd be pretty suprised if you don't have to drill out one or two though. But it's not biggie, they drill out easy. I'm pretty sure they are M6x1.0, so drill them out with a 5mm bit, run a M6x1.0 tap through the hole and you'll be back to stock. Hit the threads with antisieze when you're reassembling. |

I was thinking of putting bolts back in. I did just go get another impact driver. Will give it a go and drill out the ones that are fuckin me around. |

These are two methods i resorted to in getting mine off. I would have just drilled and re-tapped a thread, but i didn't have the correct sized tap handy. First a set of vice grips. If you're lucky enough you can get them to catch the very small edge they have on them, i managed to get a couple of mine off doing this. Next i drilled the heads off only, took it easy so only went far enough to get the head off. Then removed the flare and some of the thread is still exposed. Then used the trusty vice grips again to grab the small bit exposed and it was enough to get the thread left loose and out. |

My advice would be to just go buy one. PITA if you need to do the job right there and then but it's hndy to have one around. |

Just got them all off. Most of the back ones were ok with the phillips bit in the impact driver. Only a couple on the front moved easily. The ones that didn't move straight away I ground a slot into and then used the flat blade bit with the impact driver, worked a treat. I took Damos advice and got the M6 bolts and tap to finsih the job once I have painted the sills and hopefully paint the flares too. I want them to come off easy when I do the virual lift down the track. |

I just used a phillips head bit with my 1/4" rachet on mine, it got all out except one i rounded by not putting enough pressure on it. |
