Hey! new to this sight i have a 1994 Lwb vitara with a 2 inch lift and 31" alts couple of things are bothering me, such as: 1st on start up it blows out a cloud of smoke for a good 10 seconds. im guessing this is an oil leek somewhere? valves? 2nd thing is that i now have a very loud and obnoxious noise (wattle/tapping) coming from my rear driver side wheel area.(this only occurs while foot is pushing on petal and while reversing it is a whining/squealing noise. 3rd its an auto ..... how hard on a scale of 1/10 is a coversion?? thanks heaps Pez

hi welcome to az what colour is your smoke on start up? i would be checking brake and wheel bearing on drivers side i would keep it an auto just get your hands on a set of 5:12 diff gears and put them in will help out to correct the gearing a little bit. from what i read people are happier running 31's with an auto than with the manual. other people might be able to shed some more light on your problems.

2" lift doesn't really need a spacer, but it wouldn't hurt. Slip yoke shouldn't rattle either way, but it's worth looking at if nothing more obvious is causing it.
After that we're down to seriously broken things like diff internals, wheel bearings, fuel tank mounts... get under there and give everything you can reach a good shake, see if you can replicate it at all. Jack the rear wheels up (put car on stands!) and see if there's any play in driveline or wheels as they turn.
Then I'm out of ideas, but I don't have many good ones to start with.

As above smoke on start up is usually valve stem oil seals, Some one good with a welder could do it & possibly brace it while your at it. Any problems with your auto or you just don't like it???

Mate only small problems. Are you referring to a gearbox crossmember? Get a custom heavy duty one made because you will Just keep bending stock ones.

That cross-member is a bolt-in isn't it? Surely be able to get one at a wrecker? Then brace and re-enforce it if you can weld yourself and avoid the cost.

Mine was a hard to find noise, it was a collapsed CAT. New CAT fixed noise.
