Post subject:  Hilux Diffs spring under ?

ok well iv got some hilux diffs sitting at home and the plan was at first to
link it up etc but due the the fact mainly money wise iv decided to extend the chassis and run spring under on hilux diff to run low COG also to keep the whole thing alot more simple .. now i do remember telling me that hilux diffs are not easy for setting up Spring under can someone explane to me why is it because of the steering set up ?

also im still planing on running a 105 WB and 25 inch belly and 37s i did have a link to someone's build on Zuki kralwers with the chassis cut and he basicly did what simon did to his made it a LWB and linked it but im not going to link it so i need to work out how long the chassis needs to be extended

It's partially steering, it's partially because of the size of the diff pumpkin wanting to get into the sump and chassis.

There was a guy on Pirate trying this, but I think the thread died (?)

Yes, you need a high rate with minimal arch. There's no need to run 50mm wide springs with the weight of the hilux diffs - you'll just screw them up.

I don't think you would gain any tangable clearance from shaving the top.

And I'm sure SPUA lux diffs can be done.

yer il just run Spring over :)

would be a major pain in the ass, but you could shift the engine position to make sure the sump cleared.

still, why are you opting for leaves? if you're going to the effort of low COG and lux diffs, why not build a decent coil sprung setup? that way its technically SPOA still, but you can fine tune it a fair bit more.

hey Alien you do have a point but i think low COG will be quite hard to get running springs the reason is mainly money i realied that its going to cost me quite a bit to set it up the way i want to i dont think it will be easy or Cheap
what i was thinking is i can always change the set up later when i have money right now i just want my zook back up and running so i can go hammer it around now im not saying its real easy to set it up right but i figger its cheaper i can get the springs for free il extend the chassis where need be and run it around im thinking something like this Image its got 106 WB and 39s

From that pic, looks like a spoa with a quirky front setup.

Alot of sierra's with 35's, the top of the tyre is inline with the top of the chassis front and back. Unsure what belly you get then, but its an idea of what people are running.

You won't want bodylift on top of that. It will just look too massive.

Post subject:  Re: Hilux Diffs spring under ?

question: where do you plan on driving something that big? lol you'll have to travel a fair distance to get anything thats a challenge for it.

IMO drop the tyre size to 33x10.5 and use the money saved on those to do a coil setup on WT diffs... build something that can do a little fast as well as crawl and i reckon you'll have more fun driving it.

what sort of comps are you going to be running in? you need to figure that out and build to a class.

X2 - there's been plenty of unfinished projects sold for nothing over the years because they didn't fit the class rules of whatever short lived series it was they were being build for.

However, a comp only car is a waste of time and effort in my opinion. Driving comps and private property just doesn't allow enough seat time or variety. JMHO.

In fact, I reckon the only off road competition that offers enough seat time is off road racing. Same $$$ as 4WD comps but miles more seat time per year.

Steve.

Rego'd vehicle comps are good for that.
Drive to the comp, compete, drive home, drive to work, wheel on the weekend etc
