I drive lots if big water washouts and ruts/ rocky steep hill climbs I have 30in bighorns and a 2 inch lift I've got an Arb bar but its rooted and a uhf |

I'd say reduction gears. best bang for buck mod you can do. Once you've got the hang of that then go a locker. RUF is not a bad idea but definitely the other two first. |

No offense but just means you can't pick lines. Gears give the best overall benefit after "good" tyres. Lockers aren't required for 90% of the tracks given good wheel placement. |

Gears will make your car easier to drive in all conditions. A locker will usually get you further into the poo and not having one will teach you how much getting crossed up sucks. I will also second that good wheel placement will get you as far as someone with lockers that 'just pins it' then when you can afford them you will leave them for dead. I'll vote gears - or winch/bullbar as that will help get you out

in sand i assure u that a unlocked ungeared sierra on 30's will drive everything better than a geared one on the same tyres. |

in qld (where op is from) were lucky enough to have more then just sand available, and you cant beat the control you have with gears when driving steep inclines and declines, Or when driving rocks |

I am interested in this too. My zook is a stocker and I took it out the other day and found there was a couple of quite specific bits, mainly steps as the spring hanger just plowed into them before the wheel could get anywhere near the step. I tried a couple of different lines and approches, It probably doesn't help I am a new dero driver but I couldn't see me getting up it.
Did most of you fellas chuck some lift in first? |

I'd do this. Honestly I can see where MrRocky is coming from with his comments. There is no substitute for proper wheel placement but in my experience of all types of terrain (sand, mud, rock) sometimes the only way up is straight through a massive rut that will max out your flex, lift wheels and have you stuck with open diffs. The question you have to ask is do you need to get up there or just want to get up there? If its a case of 'have to' then the only option is to smash it, which is where a locker is gold, but coupled with gears makes a zook crazy capable. In the end drive I'd say gear it, to be nice on your clutch and zook, then once you find yourself getting stuck again, lock it.....air if you got the $$$ |

Even when unlocked we were going through stuff most wouldnt consider. As I said a good driver unlocked will out do a average driver with lockers. Anybody can point and shoot, it takes skill to drive the line. Mods - gears and get Pete to ruf you up, don't forget to budget for brake hoses and shocks (don't forget to trim the bump stop mounts) |

Lockers and 30's on any moderately hilly terrain calls for entertaining, bounce into everything, smoke that clutch type of driving. |

i like this thread what should I do to my zook next (lwb vit) i have 215s and 50mm spring lift and i have to keep it legal should i get: - tyres, for offroad only (235 or 30s) - rear spool or lockright - front spool/ lockright (on alloy diff) - other ideas? i would like to spend 500 or less |

Larry, if you want to stay 100% legal, the only thing on your list you can do is the front lock wrong. (which I wouldn't do with an alloy front diff) AFAIK, lock rights aren't actually legal for road use although they are difficult to detect. You definitely don't want to spool the rear in a daily driven vitara. You don't want a spool in the front of anything, especially an alloy diff vitara. You won't get bigger tyres on rims for your budget, and you might not like what the will do to your gearing off road. I would lock the rear in your position though- it's the biggest bang for your buck mod you can do. Steve |
