Post subject:  Vitara CV's & Axle Lengths ?

Guys.....

I'm having some issues with my RHS CV after breaking the one I had in there. I'm running a 26spline INNER CV instead of the standard 22spline & what I have been doing when I break an OUTER CV is simply just swap over the broken Outer CV + Axle and re-use the INNER CV Stub (ie: remove the Steel Ring that prevents the CV from coming apart and remove the axle and then insert the new Axle/Outer CV, then just re-insert Steel Ring to keep the CV in the CV Stub housing).... hope that makes sense....

My question is: Is there different length Axles between Vitaras (V6 vs 4cyl) and is the RHS Axle the same length as the LHS Axle ??

I'm also running Lockright in the Front as well.....

When in 4WD, I hearing a "Clunk" coming from the RHS when driving straight ahead and turning right, but not going left. It doesn't sound like your normal faulty CV and I've swapped 2 Outer CV's thinking that it might be the CV's, also swapped FWH just incase that was playing up.... still no good

I've unlocked the RHS Hub.... problem disappears, put the RHS Hub in and the LHS Hub out.... problem reappears. I've checked the RHS CV's and they appear to be tight and in good condition (they are 2nd hand though).
This problem only arose when I broke my 2nd CV......

I'm starting to think that I may have the wrong length axle in, but not sure.... Is there a difference in axle lengths of Vitaras &/or GV's? or between RHS & LHS's

cheers....

rob

half shaft lengths differ on GV's & SV's compare to SE's & are different lengths left to right, are you running the traditional style of CV or the tripod type?

1.6 vitara, 2l (widebody) and GV are all different length

from memory left and right axle are different lengths

to test if its binding get it into position and remove the hub and circlip, push on the CV to see if there is play

Do u mean push on the axle stub to see if it moves inwards ?? I gather if there is no movement, then its the wrong length axle ??

I think they are so much longer you wouldnt even fit them in there but yeah youll se ifs binding from other things

I'm just running the std setup.....

I've got my old ones in the garage if you need me to measure something? 90' carby vit.

Here you go, they are different lengths and are slightly longer if you stretch them out but this is their relaxed position.

Cheers for that, but actual measurements of the axle length is probably what I really want. Measuring them that way has a little bit too much room for error... if u know what I mean ;)

now i know this sounds dodgy... but you could make up a hybrid RHS 22spline inner CV & run the V6 outer CV & shaft, it's been done before...

There are a couple of slight variations in the CV's and some can't be mixed. Check and see if they are the same colour first and you "might" have a chance but no guarantees.

I must have fluked it, I had 2 green CV's one 22 the other 26, from memory I used the inner CV 22 spline & cup & the cage, balls & "spider thingo" (WTF are they called) from the 26 spline CV as the half shaft is a different spline on the spider thingo...

I'm using a 26spline "Inner" CV housing and have just swapped the shafts "Outer" CV's into the 26spline Inner CV Housing (ie mix and match from 22spline CV's into 26spline). I've done this once and it seemed to work, but now with the spares I have left (I bought them from wreckers & assume they're the right ones for a '93 LWB EFI Vit), something is not working out..... How much longer/shorter in length are we talking about and where is the differences.... In the axle length or the actual length of the CV Housing & Axle Stub?

the guts of the CV's differ slightly & that is where I think the noise is coming from, can you physically fit the complete CV in there, as I don't think you'd get a GV or SV CV in there.

Yeah... it appears to go into the 26spline INNER Housing no worries, then I re-install the complete Axle Inner/Outer CV's back into the Diff and FWH

Post subject:  Re: Vitara CV's & Axle Lengths ?

what i'm saying is there are differences in inner CV & you might have a mix matched cup & guts causing extra play which will give you the noise....

are they the typical ball & cage type CV's or the retarted tripod style?

I believe they are your std ball & cage type

Re: Outer CV

When trying to separate the Outer CV from the Axle Shaft on a Good & intact CV, I know u have to hit in the right spot to get over the circlip.... but is there a nack in doing this ???

Found the problem and all is fixed ;)

1mm difference found in the Inner CV's...... Typical Suzuki not having everything standard....

out of interest what colour is the inner CV, green or black & what colour was the one you pulled the replacement shaft from?

Yeah... It was the Black one which is 1mm bigger than the green ones..... I'm still running the green outer (broke my last black inner one) but I've swapped over the internals of the Inner to match the Black Inner CV housing

So..... I now know for future reference.... Green (small) // Black (larger by 1mm)

all good
