Hi Rusho

Won't idle, or idles too fast, has a flat spot,
this weekend we were in the Vic. high country and I could not get any
consistency with throttle control. One second it is flat out next no revs,
When you turn off just keeps running (pre ignition or something???)

You could try carby cleaner and the old cross the leads trick to make it back fire through the carb. Failing that, take it off and get it rebuilt. This question comes up far too often on here and more often than not ends up with a rebuild. Save yourself a headache and time and get it professionally

is there another carby that is any good, (webber ect.) all I read is
conflicting comments about webbers and such, I am a 60something old person who gets frustrated with people who bag something for the sake of it.

A lot of time running on can be an air leak, when youve got it idling somewhat stable try spraying WD40 or carby cleaner around the intake gaskets on the manifold and around te vacuum lines and so on, if you get any difference in engine speed that area is worth looking at

I dont think there is a better carby for a sierra than the one thats on it, afterall it remained pretty unchanged from 1985 to 1998, when a lot of other model cars changed quite a few times, but they dont stay perfect forever and its likely worth having it professionally rebuilt, would likely cost less than getting something off something else on and working.

I had a similar issue with my 4k motor. It came with an auto choke but it never ran right put a manual choke one on that I rebuilt and now it is sweet. It could have been that I rebuilt it or the auto choke was dicky (I always suspected this).

I think a few people have put the 4k carby on their sierras, don't know how it went but they are the same size engine.

I'd give rebuilding it a crack, if you enjoy pulling stuff to pieces and putting them back together do it yourself, I didn't find it that hard to do.

Lucky you corrected that one The stock carb is a very good thing. Some people have used a 1.6 vitara carb.

Webers are good but need to be set up correctly.

I'd just go the stoko one. If you have the $$'s to get it rebuilt it should never fail you again

Hi Martin,

First thing I'd do is change the fuel filter.
For $5 it's a good place to start.
Then take the air filter off, rev it to about 4000rpm and smother the intake with a rag.
Do this a few times to suck the dirt through.

I had very similar problems for the last couple of weeks.
Did this yesterday and now it's purring like a kitten.

If that doesn't help, do as Rusho said and get it rebuilt.
Then you should get many trouble free years from your carby.
