I am presently running 700x15 12ply Tyre's on the Maruti which have been great,problem is they are not easily obtained in remote areas unlike 16" tyre's.
Which 16" rims would be recommended for the Maruti [Sierra}as I'm thinking of possibly running 205x16 or 750x16 14ply as the vehicle is used in real 4wdr country where Cruisers fear to go.
I am presently in Sydney getting ready for Summer trip thru the Anne beadell hwy.

If you want tough sidewalls then get michelin 750R16 xzl

Hard to find but they are only 8 ply rating BUT have steel belted sidewalls. This way you get some comfort and still get a tough sidewall

Or you could go a simex 750-16 extreme trekker which is a bias ply tyre so will behave nicer off road but will be worse on the black stuff.

Get some sierra ute wheels cause they are 16 x 5.5 tubeless rather than LJ wheels which are 16 x 4.5 and need tubes

Even if you run tubes the tubeless wheels have the bead lock which helps keep the tyre on the rim when its deflated

Even the Sierra 16" rims are 16x4.50E, which mean 4.5" wide, no safety bead and still need tubes, because they only ever offered 6.00-16 bar treads with them.. You will have to go to GV 16" rims to find 5.5" wide and safety beads (16x5.5JJ). You might be thinking of the 15 inch version of the Ute wheel for the 1.3 Sierras, which was a 15x5.5JJ rim.

A 205R16 will sit better on a 4.5" rim than a 7.50-16. A 7.50 is a fairly tall tyre that will cause clearance issues on steering lock and without lift. However, other tough tyre choices in 7.50-16 are Goodyear Hi-Milers and Olympic Steeltreks

Kings do a 16 x 7 with -12 offset for Sierra pattern, F100 etc.
My Vitara had them, but previous owner kept them for his Sierra

I have put GV 16" wheels on my SJ40 which has a 2" spring lift and have no clearance problems with 225-70-16 which stand 28.5"

I like the idea of 16" GV Rims if I spot some,I also give Kings a ring on Monday as I do have enough wheel clearance as the 700xR15 are about 28.5".
The 700x15 are great just getting replacements off the shelf in the outback can be a problem,and I can always find 16" tyres

Beadell Tours know the territory you are planning on going through- I would suggest you give them a call for some advice.

My guess is they will recommend MRF tyres- 8, 10, 12 ply along the lines of these.
but you will need split rims to fit them.

These can be made by converting landcruiser 6 x 16 splits, or landrover 6 x 16 splits by having new centres welded in
(thats what I am doing at the moment)

SuziWest makes splits for the Sierra about $280 each which is another option,as I work in the remote area I have had great success with my 700x15 tyres its just getting harder to find.
16" seem a better option as availability is paramount its just a question which Rims to select as I will require about 10 if I go this way.

A lot of mining and exploration companies are going away from split rims due to OH&S hassles- so if you have a contact in the mines you might be able to get a heap of landcruiser 6 x 16 splits- and have them converted.

I dont know about the eastern states- but here in W.A. a company called OTRACO did all the tyre changing at the mines I worked on.
If you have them- or a similar mob locally,you could probably get your donor split rims from Otraco, or mine sites and exploration crews for a couple of cartons.
second hand tyre dealers over here want $60 to $90 a rim!

Then just have new centres welded in to whatever offset you want.
damn sight cheaper than $2800 for a set of rims- as long as you have the time to play with
