Post subject:  How do I adjust the hand brake

Ok I have a Drover (I know  ) it's all ready for RWC but I need to adjust the handbrake. It has the hand brake on the T'case. THe handbrake itself is sloppy (in a way). It still works but not very good.
Can anyone give me a quick rundown on steps to do it. I have tried to loosen the lock nuts and crap like that but to no avail. No real biggy as I can always wait till me mate Royce pops over.

Does it have an access hole in the drum? It should have some kind of adjuster for the shoes inside.

To tell you the truth I have not looked as it was getting to late and I had just finished doing the wheel cyls and axle seals but I'll look tomorrow. The cable is real loose so that's why I though it was just a case of adjusting that.

Like any drum brake the adjuster in the drum needs to be adjusted properly first then the cable adjusted after that.
If there is no hole to stick a screwdriver through then you will need to drop the drive shaft off and remove the drum, adjust, refit, adjust, refit and so on till you get it right. Real pain in the arse but once it's done you won't need to touch it for a while.

OK. There was the little slot at the brake drum so adjusting the handbrake was easy. Still got the problem of the handbrake lever being really loose. So loose that when you put the handbrake lever all the way down and let it go it will click up about 2 clicks and make the handbrake light come on. I've tried all sorts of things with the cable from under the car to adjust but no good. I'm starting to think that the lever itself has had it's day.

May also be a stretched cable Bruce. Is there an adjustment for the cable somewhere or is it at the max now?

It's a bit different than the Sierra ones I think mate. Does not seem to have a adjustment nut althou I could be looking at it wrong. At least the hand brake works better now. Not that they are good at the best of times :-) Thanks for ya help mate.

mine does that also Bruce.. the hand brake to the floor and it comes up a couple of clicks... a steel capped blundstone solves the problem pretty easily.. but i also think its just an adjustment issue, im just to lazy to crawl under and adjust it. lol.. still holds the car on a decent hill thou.. :D

sounds like the cable isnt sliding back all the way, might need to whip the handbrake drum off and give it a clean

You need to move up to Queensland, we haven't seen a cloud in 2 weeks!!

It may have a partially seized cable or like Royce suggested, drum needs cleaning out. The hand brake only needs to hold on a 1:5 hill, you cannot apply whilst moving. How many clicks does it come up Bruce?

6 clicks now mate. It's a lot better than b4. Just lazy to pull the drum off but I think I should and at least have a look
