On my vit theres a sender on the thermostat housing at the back.
If that is faulty, or has a poor earth, a/c won't come on.
It is a fail safe, if motor is too hot, a/c wont work.

Good chance it is a similar problem.
To check, pull wire off, and earth it,
then a/c should work

no mines a 1.6 but theres bound to be similarities.

I ended up putting a switch on my dash, to bypass the sender.

Hi, khanacross.
On the left hand side of the radiator you'll find a couple of relays. Check both of these, as one's for the compressor clutch and the condenser fan. Mine had dropped off it's bracket and hung upside down, filling with water & crap when I washed the motor. This fritzed the unit. Replaced it with another, all good again. Good luck finding one though. It seems to be a jap spec unit, and the local suppliers don't carry them. It's a 12v 30amp resistor protected unit. Check your local jap wreckers, that's where I got mine. Maybe grab a couple while your'e there.
They both live in rubber sleeves.(helps to trap the water when they're upside down....)

Hope this helps,

weelz.
