Hey my car has been getting harder to start and now cuts out randomly. My girlfriend ran the battery dead trying to start it the other day so I have been clutch starting it the last few days. could the fact the battery is near dead affect how the car runs? Idk any help will be great. Thanks, max |

yeah mate it is crazy how much more pep you get from a good battery i'd say charge your battery or get a new one and see how it goes from there - if its still hard to start check different things like plugs, leads, coil, fuel? |

is the starter sounding dull when you initially trying to start it? like struggling? or does it sound normal but wont kick over? |

Yeh the battery is almost new (like 2 months old), just dead. Well the cutting out didn't start happening untill the battery was run dead but the reason it is dead is because it was taking so long to start. Ill give the battery a charge and then check spark and fuel. If anyone has any other info it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers max |

could the fact the battery is near dead affect how the car runs? A stuffed (or indeed no battery at all - but don't do that) shouldn't cause a Sierra to randomly 'cut out' once running. Have you checked all the basics - plugs/leads vacuum leaks at carby etc.? |

or does it sound normal but wont kick over? It was turning normal and would try to start but just splutter and die. It starts fine when clutch started tho? |

Yeh I didn't think the battery was causing it to cut out but hey you never know. I have done just a visual check on the leads but havn't checked the fuel or carbie. I'll check them and let u know. Cheers |

When it cuts out while driving does the tacho drop to 0? If so check your ignition coil connections. Maybe when you clutch start it, it wiggles a terminal and you have ignition? |

Idle cutout solenoid maybe? Will it start if you give it a good few kicks on the throttle to prime the accelerator pump? Does it only cut out at idle, or also when you're giving it some welly? To track it down, I'd first have someone crank the engine while I sprayed some Start Ya Bastard down the carby throat. If it started fine on that then I'd be sussing out the fuel system (fuel filter, pump, lines, mesh filter on carby inlet, carby itself). If it still wouldn't start on that though, then I'd be looking at ignition (coil/leads/plugs/engine earth). Though I'd also be posting on here for advice, so I'm happy to be corrected |

mine had the same symptoms and it was the main lead going to the centre of the coil was the wrong way around so it wasn't connecting properly i turned it around - haven't had a problem since |
