So i've bought a conversion from PJ.zook. It was in his hard top and i'm halfway through putting it in my hardtop. Now i've got everything hooked up. Followed his schematics to the enth. Haven't fitted the fuel pump as I wanted to make sure I got everything else right, IE, Ignition, Power to the dash and things like this. Now When I hooked the starter motor up I did it as per normal. Positive being the closest to the battery and negative being teh closest to the block. I plugged on the signal for the starter. Connected the negative terminal on the battery made sure the key was in the 'off' position and then soon as the positive terminal touched the positive knob on the battery the car started cranking over. Triple checked everything including earths for the whole body including the two behind the gauge cluster. All are earthed. What could be causing this problem? The only things I had to splice into were 11. Splice into Sierra's ignition switch 'IG' wire (on 1.3's the wire should be B/Bl) 12. Splice into Sierra's ignition switch 'ST' wire (on 1.3's the wire should be B/Y) This was for the ecu's Ignition Start Switch and Ignition (Black and yellow stripe) Any ideas? I also tried to change the polarity of the negative and positive terminals on the starter but just got smoke |

Did you out the positive onto the right terminal on the starter solenoid? |

on mine.. positive was closet to the battery like you said.. start signal goes on the spade... no negative on the starter motor tho.. im pretty sure you dont run a negative to the starter... only the block itself.. |

Explain? Had the terminals the right way. the motor cranked properly. When they were the other way the motor just clicked and the starter smoked. |

Ok. Well tried with no negative. Still no joy. Still tried to crank even without the negative. |

explain what? from battery + goes to starter motor and possibly alternator - goes to shell and block starter wire bl/y stays on 1.3 harness and as you said before. splice the ST an IG from 1.6 harness into the 1.3 loom |

make sure your earths are good.. whatever you was running the neg to on the starter originally.. run that to the biock (assuming that it is actially a -) |

Still tried to crank?? where are you pickig your starter signal up from? sounds like it has constant 12v |

X2 Sounds like you spliced the wrong wire into the Sierra ST wire and are feeding 12V into the start circuit. Ben |

unplug the starter solenoid wire (black yellow) where you tapped into teh start wire for the ecu, cut that connection you made plug starter solenoid wire back in, if it doesnt try and crank itself now then there is something wrong with teh wire you tapped, see if no appears to have power on it and confirm its black and yellow dont ever ever reverse the terminals on a battery again, if you are really lucky youve only fried a cheap sensor |

Unplugged both ecu wires and it still does the same thing. It's not the ecu side of splicing. |

Unplugged it to isolate it, still trying to start from battery. Ecu is completely cut out now. |

trace your starter wire back till you find the problem.... |

unplug the ignition switch and see if the black yellow still has power on it note I said has power on it not the starter still cranks |

I used mine from the 1.3 harness.. works first go... Im not sure how P.J has done his wiring, but I used his schematics as reference for my conversion.. Also the ECU has nothing to do with the cranking of the motor, only relays and sensors.. |

yeah.. im aware of that it wants signal.. just saying that you dont need it in this scenario to fault find his issue |

So the only wires you have on the starter is the large positive supply and negative on the block/stater and it still tries to crank? If so then you either have the positive on the wrong side of the solenoid or the solenoid is jammed on. Dan |

Positive is on the correct side. Might be the starter motor. I have two here to try. The only things on the starter are positive and negative. Tried it with no negative and the earth from the block to the negative terminal on battery. And it still try's to crank. |

Swap the starter motor for another one. |

Yep as above. Or pull apart and clean up the solenoid setup. |

When I had the negative on the terminal closest to the block as a negative it would continually crank. So took that away. Just had positive to positive and ignition wire on it. Works. Normally. |
