Hey guys,

I've been considering a tray back stockman for a while now but nothing has popped up. Anyway long story short my uncle has a 82 sierra which has had a ute chop and a 1200 datsun motor shoe horned into it, maybe even a 5spd aswell.

I saw him today as he lives down south and found out the he's considering selling it because he might be moving to perth.

He's recently spent a fair bit of money on it having the motor and gearbox rebuilt and a new clutch installed. He also had the wiring cleaned up and sorted out which cost a bit too. Plus other things such as new door seals, wheel cylinders, brake shoes etc.....

I only have vague memories of it from a few years ago but i remember the ute chop was actually pretty tidy and didnt look out of place. only thing was the gearstick was moved in a bit due to the 5spd

Was curious if anyone has had any experience with this conversion and what they think. Also what $$ would you guys consider a fair price? I know its hard without seeing it but i'm probly gonna have a look at it tomorrow an will try to remember to take some pics

The A12 is a nice little motor, but if you find it lacks a bit, you could swap it for an A15 without too many dramas.

As for money, NFI.

Thanks charcoal. With all the effort they went to I still don't understand why they didn't just chuck in a 1.6. Hopefully get a look and drive later on today

If it were me, I would rip out the datto stuff, and drop in a 1.6

Ok so just had a look and drive. The chassis has been extended which is why the chop looks ok. It has had a complete re-wire. The sump from the a12 has been modified and has a slight crack causing a bit of oil on the sump gearbox an transfer. The tailshafts have been extended to suit and the fuel tank is a custom job. As far as looks and rust go it seems to be acceptable but the main concern is I don't think it's been mod plated for the a12 or chassis extension.

Theres receipts for all parts etc but I'm not sure whats involved in mod plating it for the chassis extension and a12

Wiki says the a12 was used before 1982 if this is true this is where you will hit your first boundary.

Engineers won't let you put a older motor in a younger car if an ADR was introduced in any of the years in between and it just so happens an ADR was introduced in 1982 atleast thats how it was in NSW about 6 months ago.

On the other hand though if the car is already rego'd plenty of people in NSW get away with the sneaky engine conversion. I don't know the registration process in WA but maybe it's possible?

Yea it's possible to get away with it in WA as we don't have inspections, it's more the legallitys for insurance in the event of something unfortunate happening. I'd be trying to use this ute as a daily whilst I'm on uni break as I'm a qualified fridgie so would like to use it heavily over 3 months or so

Datsun 1200 utes were made from 1971 to 2007.

datsun 12, and 1500 were great long lived motors that were super easy to maintain.

The pick of the bunch IMO was the fuel injected A14, found on some forklifts...
