I don't understand how my old dead Vitara engine was running.
Could not line up any of the cam timing marks.

The new Swift/Baleno engine lined up as it should.
That its how I put it together. Using cam and sprocket from Vitara.
(for the dizzy drive)

Comparing the cams by eye, looked indentical,
with both cams having the E up.

Wonder if it was cause of the vit motors demise somehow?

You have a new belt on now?

I dont see how the old engine could run with that timing

1 or maybe 2 teeth out it will run, but not quarter or a sprocket. 8O

The only way that I can see that motor running with those timing marks is if the bottom pulley has sheared the key (or has not got a key) and has spun on the crank.

Yes has a new timing belt.

I'm struggling to see if the Vitara cam sprocket kew way is in right place,
I think it is, as someone has previously marked whit on it,
may have to pull front off to double check.

Need to re time dizzy, too, pointing to 4 not 1

I placed both cams next to each other,
both we E at top,
and all the cams looked identical.

It got me stuffed how it ran at all.

??? Are you sure no.1 is on the compression stroke???

There is no way in he'll that would run like that!

I will pull off crank pulley one day,
check the theory that its slipped somehow.
The bearing implosion could have done something to it?

Anyway pulled of the timing belt cover and stuff from new donk,
to satisfy myself it was ok..
I do have cam sprocket on the correct keyway and marks line up right still.

But lucky I checked,
some dumbo put the timing belt on backwards.
Until I searched for timing issues,
I didn't know there was a right/wrong way round.

oh well, glad I found out the easy way,
before I'd assembled everything.

It was never a power house,
blamed the auto, big tyres and lockers for that,
but maybe engine was not at full strength???

Can't check it on the strokes, as Vit cam is now on the swift motor.

haven't done a proper tappet clearance check yet.
But I did make sure none were too tight.
Some have a lot of play,
maybe how it was got to run, with valve timing so far out?

No idea,
just hope it goes forever after this

i didnt know there was either? what is it? i was always told that if the belt was being re-used then it should go on the way it came off.

Mine had arrows on it for direction it should go.
IE direction of engine rotation.
But most people said, writing needs to be right way up from the front.

putting a used one on the way it came off does make sense

yes all of the above is true, but if it has been put on backward and you are intending to reuse put it back on the way it was
