So im up for a new pinion bearing in the rear of the NT. Any suggestions as to a kit to go for or what else to do while the carrier is out? Cant be affording a 'legit' locker at the moment, but the option of welding it is there..

Going to redo the brakes pads and cylinders, and replace wheel bearings while its apart, If you have a list of part numbers for a complete diff rebuild, (pinion,crush tube,carrier bearings, wheel bearings, brake pads, cylinders etc) post em up

pretty filthy mess when I pulled the 3rd out...



reminded me of vegimite, or as Atari mentioned.. Chocolate Icing!

a day in the parts washer got the 3rd to its current inspection worthy state..



interested if anyone has a guide as to how to set the backlash on the pinion also.

How did so much mud get in? O_O

I bought these to redo my difs as I couldn't find any other kits that came with a new crush tube from repco/bursons or ebay.

I got a friend with a backlash gauge to actually set mine up correctly so I can't help you there . I believe the correct setting is between 0.1 and 0.2. Its mentioned in the sierra workshop manual.

I got my rebuild kit from lowrange, was about $110 before the money went to shit. Doesn't come with as much parts as the lockedup kit has though.

I assume 1l diff parts are the same as 1.3l

No 1.0 gear hear.. (not currently fitted anyway)

will sus out lowrange, was hoping for a bearing number or the like, and get thru a bearing shop, but guess a 'kit form' might be easiest. What differs between the lowrange and locked up kit?

there is a few on the fleebay, comes with shims, crush sleeve, bearings etc, but run between 190-250 $$..

Did you do the refitment yourself?

as for the slop that got in there, breather goes into the back of the cab and stupid me thought 'meh, ill just vent it outside...' -NOT A WISE MOVE. heavy rain, daily driven,=diff full of crud-not oil!

Go to a diff place if your not sure how to set backlash and bearing preload properly. If you want to do it yourself you are going to need a micrometer and feel for the bearing preset, other than that it's easy.

You'd think a diff shop could set a diff properly, it's not always the case from my experience... So I guess doing it yourself is always going to be better

Nah I didn't fit it, oozuk did when he put my lockers in.
I'll be doing it myself next time though to save a bit of money.
Make sure you get the preload right because you might end up with a stuff diff again

The difference between the kits are that the locked up on comes with ring gear bolts I think. And LROR doesn't.

I've put my '87 lwb nt 1.3 into ARBCairns for front and rear diff lockers, and they think I should get the diffs rebuilt at the same time.

They are having trouble sourcing the kit.

Not sure what the carrier bearing part numbers are but weaves gave me the part numbers for a pinion bearing which are 30306 and 30307.
Just walk into your local bearing place and ask for the bearings. They won't have a kit you'll have to buy each bearing separate.
You need 2 carrier bearings and a pinion seal and bearing I'm pretty sure.
If you would like a kit lowrange will get you one under a week

thanks for that, but I think they're having trouble getting seals,I've printed
lowrange's address of this site's business directory,but I was hoping to get it sorted in less than a week.

I gave the car to them 2 weeks autgo, and told they had a month to do it,but I just quit work, and want the vehicle back NOW.

Pinion seal u can get off eBay or suzistore. You'll have it in maybe 3 days. Bearings u can get straight away if you go to a bearing place.
I went nd got a pinion bearing today and ordered a seal should be here tomorrow.
All I did was walk in say what car nd model done deal walk out with a bearing
