hi mates. habing a problem with my sierra. had a problem with it heating up so then got radiator flushed and seemed to be good. then went out for a day and was fine. then it sat for a few hours then on my way home it started heating up again :(

so i got a new radiator and am still having the same problem. it heats up driving around the streets to about 3/4 temp. would go higher i rekn too.

when i got home i let it idle for a while and it seems that if i switch the thermo off the temp start to drop straight away. then if i turn it back on it goes up again. so wierd

i had the fan on a rx7 and had the same problem with it heating up with the wires hooked up one way. reversing them fixed it on that car ( i think anyway. was a while ago) but it doesnt do it on the sierra unfortunatly.

any ideas what i can do to get it fixed with the current setup? i wil change to a normal fan setup if i cant make this work

run a fat wire from teh firewall to teh battery negative terminal, make sure the cable from teh block to the battery is tight and clean

what wil that do exactly? lol

i ask because it has a wire from the firewall that used to go to the battery but now i dont hook it up. haha

Have you confirmed that the motor is acutally heating up, or is the temp gauge playing up. As Royce said, check your body/chassis earths and beef up your body earth from the fire wall to the Neg. terminal on the battery. Temp gauge rising is pretty comon when electrical load is placed on sierra electrics with poor earthing.

In regard to fan placement, the fan should suck air through the radiator core, so should be placed behind the core sucking air from the cooler side over the core. Sounds like you had your RX7 wired to blow/suck hot engine bay air over the core to try to cool it

Hahaha, so the wire that the factory electrical engineers decided was needed you left off

its a new temp sensor thing.

lol. i didnt know if that firewall wire was a "custom" mod or what. il try it now

New temp sensor or not, if the wiring isnt any good it wont do shit. Fix up the earths and see how you go. How do you have the fan wired. If its wired properly then the switch shouldnt get hot at all as its only carrying current to activate the relay.

I'd take a punt there is no relay if the switch is getting hot... Then i'd guess the thermo isn't getting enough power to spin up properly?

no relay i dont believe. just straight wires. has a fuse thing in the positive i think it is but. fan goes pretty fast. if i sit there with car off but fan on it spins faster if i push the clutch. pretty wierd

Is your clutch cable hot????

The clutch cable/mechanism is probably provideing a better earth when you push it against the stop. SERIOUSLY check out your earths.

yep. bad earth. mine did exactly the same thing... reason it does it when you push the clutch in, is because as your car is now it earths to the motor but not to the body. clutch cable joins the motor to the body. dont leave it too long, mine half melted my throttle cable when i started it. went to take off, throttle jammed on full on me. scared the shit out of me...

oh no. better fix it before i use the car next

i believe its fixed now. still got up to about half but didnt have the up and down temp problem and the fan is goin fast the whole thime now.

i hooked up the firewall to battery earth.

and my clutch cable was full frayed apart and all popped out of the plastic casing. have a new one in now. didnt touch the main earth to engine block. only just hooked it up from puttin gthe motor back in so prety sure its good.

im going to say it was the clutch cable causing the problem and this would explain why it was fine for half the day then the problem occured. as the firewall to battery earth was off when the problem arose and was fine then problem started

so il say problem solvered. and i got an new radiator for good measure now lol

You clutch cable was acting as the main body earth, wasn't it's fault, it was just doing the job of the body earth you left off...

The clutch cable is not meant to be electrical! I have never seen an electrical clutch cable in a car..

8O

Yes, But some accel cables are meant to be electric..They are wires though..Not cables.

Did you fit a relay to the circuit? and is the switch still getting hot?
