Just rebuilding my G16B and was wondering if the water pump needs a rubber gasket, or if it can use a paper gasket.
The reason i'm asking is because both my rebuild kit and the water pump came with a paper gasket, but the FSM says to use a rubber gasket.

Any clarification would be great, thanks.

When you buy a waterpump it comes with a paper gasket, I smear a bit of blue gasket silicon to ensure it has a propper seal. Some people dont even bother with the paper gasket.

If the surfaces are clean and not scratched or gouged then there's no need for any type of sealant

Thanks for the tip buzbox, I was planning on smearing some aviation sealant on both sides of the gasket.

possibly, but a small smear will ensure it won't leak and may save you time and the pain in having to remove it if it does leak.

I'm not sure if aviation sealant would work, but as long as it is heat resistant and remain flexible, it should be ok.

I'm using Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant so it should hopefully do the trick.

I'm not sure how it would be with a cork gasket (sump), so i'll pick up some No. 2 tomorrow as a few people on this forum have used (i think... )

Please don't use sealant on the cork gasket

I find it hard to find solid info on here as there are generally a lot of conflicting opinions.

Why shouldn't I use a sealant on cork? What would you recommend instead?
No sealant / ultra blue??

Sorry for the question spamming, engine rebuild virgin here

if you insist on using sealants on gaskets that dont need them at least get close on right

aviation form a gasket (any type) is for mating machined surfaces with a paper gasket

best bet for cork is an adhesive sealant on one side to stick in place and nothing on the other, and dont overtighten it, this is very important, you jsut want the gasket to ever so slightly squish, too tight and it will leaks

Paper gasket = ok to use silicone
Cork = Not ok to use silicone

Cork gaskets compress so firstly you won't need to use silicone and secondly, silicone may deterioate the cork.

Cheers royce, will torque to spec without any sealant.
If that fails i'll turf the cork and use ultra blue or something.
