I just got 5.12 diffs installed, including a rear airlocker, by a reputable driveline specialist. However when accelerating from about 30 - 60km/h there is a noticable whine/whirring sound which gets louder the faster I go. Could this be from the rear diff? Since it's from a Vit which is older, could this just be wear? I did get solid pinion spacers installed if it helps.

Should I be worried? Is it the sound of a diff going to crap itself?

sounds like the gears might not be set properly

would have to be a pretty loud noise before something goes bang but I'd go back and see what they say

does it lesson when you back of the peddle if so its the crown wheel and pinion if its there all the time it may be a bearing either way take it back it will only get worse till BANG!!!! THEN IT GETS DEAR

Yeah, the sound goes away when I'm off the go pedal. I figure it's the gears although the diff guy says they were good diffs. There's no clunk when taking off so I think it's not backlash?

Neverthless it's going back next week.

it gears for shore, i did mine in my gq over easter, it started as a little whine in the distance when i left rover park, buy time i got home it deaferning.
it has to last another week before i can get a new center then swap the air locker over, there is always a drama when you play in mud

I've now worked out that my problem is my diff, it clunks around a little at low speeds and vibrates a lot at higher speeds. took the back wheels of the ground in my garage and got the car going 60kph and got out and it's definitely the diff.

Do i just replace the center? Do I put a banana in it? Is there something that can be done without replacing things? I've got brand new bearings in it so it's def not them.

Any idea how long it'd take till it stopped working?

how long is a peice of string.......

how much pinion play do you have in the bearing and to the crown wheel if this is still ok is your oil clean has it been contaminated ?
if any of the above fail then days are very numbered
if there ok it could last for ever and just be noisy it could let go tomorrow !!
try moreys oil stabiliser or similar depending how hard you drive it and were to weather you panic or not with out hearing it if its minor i would drive it till it died but thats me i am a tight arse.
but of cause they always die at the worst times !!

How do I check the pinion? or do i need to pull the diff apart first?

The oil is brand new so that should be ok.

I generally drive my car pretty easily.

It's been vibrating a bit for a while and it's been getting louder so i think I should probably be swapping out the center.

How hard is it to swap the center? and does anyone have one that they are willing to part with?

To check pinion play jack it up so wheels are of the ground hand brake of and grab pinion flange at end of tail shaft, by hand feel for up and down movement on pinion shaft this will determine bearings should be "no" up down movement, now turn left and right and see how much movement you have before the wheels start to turn this should be maybe 10mm of flange movement left to right, if there is very little then it's to tight if it's heaps more then to much play. Hope that makes since but this can't see if your broken teeth some were of cause. And sorry can't help with vitara parts.
