Woohoo,

Sourced an M18 and ECU to go in my jimny to replace the M13!

Read up all the conversions threads on the forum. Still struggling to grasp every detail but basically I'm going to use the M18A Block, head and Injectors. Everything else will be Jimny. Jimny clutch, flywheel, intake and exhaust manifolds, sump etc...

Once I have it running I'll drive it to the local dealership on the M13A ECU and then pop the M18A in and have them program the immobiliser code to match the jimnys. (Although I'll give the M18 ECU a go before I take it on the wild chance that it might have been programmed with the same code - you never can be sure!)

Then I'll get it engineered and all is sweet I hope!

would be cool if you could document the install & do a write up for AZ, i'm sure there are others including myself that are interested in the conversion.

Yeah, I just got it home and had a look. The guys left everything on except the exhaust manifold and the Flywheel. SO essentially I have a complete engine, I'll certainly be using everything M18 that I possibly can, definately be using the M18 intake now I know that I have it. Its looking good.

It's a lightweight engine, I manage to cling a rope over and shoulder and carry out of the back of the van on my own. I reckon I'll probably be getting more power at no expense in terms of weight, although the fuel economy might take a hit, although possibly not since I won't be thrashing it everywhere anymore.

make sure you use the M18 intake!!!!!!!! M13 is horrible, restricts the power at 5000rpm and backs right off. The correct manifold I found powers constantly to the rev limit

What's the difference???

I want to see the difference between the m13a and m18a ECU when the car's are put on the dyno....*cough*Drew*cough*

Its larger on the inside, aka more flow at higher RPM

Is there a way to tell them apart visually? As I'd like to know which one is on mine.. Hope it's the m18's original!

Has anyone dynoed the stock M13AA (M13A with VVT) engine yet? Thats what I got as standard i think according to wikipedia. The aim of all this conversion is to be able to hold 110kph uphill, this is absolutely not possible at the moment even when I drop a gear or even two. I ain't planning on burning rubber everywhere I go.

My m13a with 31's can hold 110kph up hills  but i do have reduction gears :helloo:

well this is the thing, I'll probably be able to get by without reduction gears even if I go big tyres in future with the M18 so thats that decision. hell of a lot more torque. The M15 has 100hp more or less, which is generally enough to shift any small vehicle pretty well. But on the same basis, I've had plenty of cars with 85bhp like the M13, but none of them have been anything like as slow as the jimny. So the drivetrain must sap a lot of power. 100hp from the M15 might still feel a bit lame, so I've gone bigger.

Bigger tyres (more rolling resistance), bad aerodynamics, yes driveline friction, etc. Also, more weight due to two gearboxes, two extra shafts, extra diff.

My 1.3 Jimny is fast though, will hold 110km/h uphill with the A/C running. It can also pull a tonne behind it... Just!

Mate, you got a good one if it'll hold 110kph uphill on 215 tyres or larger. Best not to mess with it.

My M13 couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Shorter Gears = Better tool
Bigger Engine = Bigger Hammer
