hi everyone, i have a suzuki carry with a 1ltr conversion in it. I've had issues on and off with mr van that was ment to be a cheap little project.

First ever carby car so alot of of this stuff is still learning for me (only recently found out cars with distributors have points) still have a decent mechanical knowledge, done engine rebuild and conversion my self. But onto my questions

I had the van running great for a while. But its gotten worse and worse. The water pump is on the way out, but at the moment the car is coughing out the carby, splutters and farts, starts fairly easy but really rough idle.and stalls a bit, never while running. Once warm it doesnt get much better.

Couple of the symptoms lead me to believe its running lean as the motor cooks when you let it idle but once moving cools down again, not sure if thats due to being lean or water pumped stuffed...

Where abouts on the f10a carby is the a/f adjustment screw?? Theres a screw on the accelertaor cable linkage, spring thing but i have a feeling thats to do with idle speed?

Will post up some pics tonight hopefully

IM no expert but it sounds like timing to me.

also note that the 1 liter motors in the sierra can have their distributers replaced with the electronic ignition dizzy from a g13b which takes point out of the equation

If its running lean its probably because the carby needs a good clean. I would start by removing the carby, giving it a good clean out and put a kit through it. It that doesn't change it then start playing whith the mixure.

I seriously doubt that it would cook running lean on idle. At idle efficiency is low and thus CC temps are low even running on the lean side. I would more so check the cooling system and how well the shrouding/fan is working.

One simple way to check if in fact it is running lean is to slowly pull the choke flap closed. If it does in fact pick up and run smoother it's usually an indication of lean running.

Whats the timing/dwell set to? Super retarded timing can lead to increased heat. When was the last time you changed the points/condenser? As tanshi stated a good upgrade is to replace the points setup with an electronic dizzy

The F10A used in the Super Carry uses different ancilliaries to the F10A used in a Sierra.

The carb is different, so the location of Idle and mixture screws will not necessarily be the same.

The dizzys are definately different, with the Super Carry rotating in the opposite direction, so the electronic dizzy conversion as done on the Sierra F10A won't work on the Super Carry as the drive gear on the cam is angled the wrong way.

You say you "have a Suzuki Carry with a 1ltr conversion in it". Unless you can clearly ID what engine you have, you could run into problems identifying the issue. It could be a Super Carry engine swapped in, or it could be a Frankenstein job with a Sierra F10A long engine fitted with the old Carry F8A bits (Carb, manifolds, dizzy, etc) to adapt it in.

yeah the joys of buying 2nd hand and half finished i suppose.

this weekend i'll hopefully change the water pump, and i'll have a stab at setting the timing again. prick of a job, dont have a dwell meter but i do have a timing light, which requires you to hold a mirror up next to the inspection hole and try and view it that way.

just having another quick fiddle while taking the photo's i've noticed the float level its getting really low, ie almost off the sight glass low. probably whats causing my problems i think.

guess that either means, float it stuffed.
electric fuel pump i have is clogged up and can't pump enough fuel
or the needle valve might be stuffed

either way i think i may be pulling mr carby off the engine and cleaning and replacing a few things

anyways here some pics of the carby in question as i'd still like to know the location of a/f screw

this is the carby in question, the only labeling i can find on it so far till i rip it off the car is mikuni solex.

Image

this is the the screw that i'm sure just dictates idle speed. just behind the white and black wire in the middle of the 2nd photo there's a shiny silver flat head screw, haven't really tried to turn it to see if that affects performance.

Image

this pic just makes me cry when i think of how i have to try and look at the inspection hole for the timing :(

any more help or advice greatly appreciated.

So do you have a Carry (ST80 ot 90) with a 1.0lt conversion, or do you have a Super Carry (SK410) with a factory 1.0lt?

Try and find a Factory manual for your Carry, they are far better than the Haynes/Clymer/Gregory's books, even if they did one for the Carry.

I haven't seen a Super Carry one for sale for a while, but there is a ST90 one on E-bay.
