I'm gonna buy this tidy soft top Sierra this arvo unless someone beats me to it... only one thing it's got a dead motor. What tools do I need to do an engine swap out from Sierra A to Sierra B? And what sort of time frame to get it done? I've never done an engine swap before, but I figure a Sierra is gonna be the easiest car to learn on. If doing it myself sounds like a dumb idea let me know too - i'm not exactly Johnny Mechanic, but palming it off i'll never learn for myself. |

Yeah its easy as. Just need socket set and spanners, crane patience cos its gets annoying sometimes. I did my swap in 50mins in a hurry, so should easily be a saturday job. |

I usually like to leave the gearbox attached the motor and pull the whole lot out together. Same with putting it in. Block up the gearbox lever holes so the oil doesn't pour everywhere though because it will be on a big angle when taking it out. Possibly label the wiring harness ends, incase you're not sure. The NT and WT harnesses have different plugs in places. ooo lots of little tips i can't remember. Should be all do-able by a newbie in one weekend. |

Answer me this. Does the gearbox need to be drained before ya pull the jack shaft out from behind it, I've had to do it in my rx7 and my sr20 Silvia and rb25 skyline. Is the rear sealed with the shaft? |

Its sealed with the shaft yep. I Actually drained the gearbox through the back. |

My clutch is only three months old, engine about 10K old. I think i'll do what Steve said and keep the engine/gearbox all together. The easier the better. Sweet - engine crane = $44 a day, and got all the sockets and spanners listed above. Lets hope I don't find a way to arse it up

I'm trying to figure out if the rear seal on the gearbox need the jack shaft to keep the oil in. Or if it's sealed without it. |

... i just use what i have I did my clutch because it was rooted after 31's and standard gearing. and rear main cos it was 10bucks and seeping. reused my inlet and exhaust gaskets but

Maybe my oil levels are low, but, the oil doesn't come out the shaft seal until it's on an angle. So, don't even undo the jack shaft from the transfer case, it will slide out of the gearbox when you move the gearbox forward. Once the engine/gearbox is ready to move, just pull it all up and to the front. Put a oil tray under the car. Same when you put it back in, line the shaft in the gearbox and slide it back. PS. There's always one wire or cable that you forget to undo

i might have missed something but ,, it has a 1.6 in it, not a sierra engine , has only got blown head gasket and add sais has papers to say head is o.k why not just throw a new head gasket on and away u go ?? watch u dont snap the dizzy on the firewall when removing engine carefully push a rag into the rear g,box seal with a small screwdriver so oil wont piss out on angle  works for autos so i guess manuals the same

Bargain - cost me $2000 in the end. The plan is to make one super Sierra, not going to muck around putting together a spares car, the hard top will be free to a good home once I scab what I want off it. There's no comparison with an A/B drive - my hardtop's running gear is 1000% more lively, it has to come into the new project. The soft top has an A1 body and chassis, so that's for keeps too. Win win. No pics? Here's one before the rain came. On the piss now so no progress to be made tonight
