Post subject:  Uh oh. Jimny Snapped Sway Bar mount

So I was in the Flinders Ranges the other week, and I dunno how I did it and didn't even notice when I did it but I snapped my drivers side swaybar mount....

I've been defected for it so I have to get it fixed.

I don't have much of an idea to take it... Is this something a normal mechanic can fix or should I take it to a fabricator?

Can this mount just be welded back together, or will an new one need to be made? Or would I be able to source one from Suzuki?

Any idea how much i could expect to pay someone to fix it?

I thought it was really unusual for this to break :S

I have attached photo's for ya to look at....

ANY help or info is greatly appreciate.

Cheers.

Weld the thing back on mate, get a fabricator to do it if you can't weld. It's only a sway-bar mate. I'd leave the thing off :P

Yeh well i'd just take it off too if i didn't have to get it undefected.... Bloody annoying.

vermin on here had the same thing happen... no defect though, so he just took his off. most people take theirs off.

just get it welded back on, then once its passed take the thing off and no one will be any wiser that it was once there.

I'm all for cutting and chopping. It's just unfortuante that when the coppa pulled me over to canary me for my HID's he saw the drag link hanging down... He wouldn't have noticed otherwise!

Yeh you're right. these were 55w too...

I've taken them out now.... Stock headlights just aren't as good :( I've tried to clean my headlights using a Headlight restorer thing pack I got from Super Cheap but they still won't come up good.

Looking at the rust in the "break" it's been there a long time......

Post subject:  Re: Uh oh. Jimny Snapped Sway Bar mount

mmm I thought that too.... I'm a bit bummed about the amount of surface rust on this vehicle. Didn't notice it all when I bout it.

Gotta get to it all with some kill rust see if that will help.

would the weld need to be x-rayed (engineers cert) to pass the inspection?

If the edges are beveled, welded and ground back smooth and painted, No one would know.

what about for insurance though?

If i accident and they inspected the car and found the rewelded mount.... could that void my insurance?

For now I just need it welded back on to fool vicroads in to removing the defect.

in an accident those mounts would snap like twigs anyway... and you aren't to know if the previous owner welded a swaybar mount back on are you? =)

Really depends? if you find a cheap bare housing, will be more avaliable in vic. (ask Monkey about his drama's in W.A) if you do all the work, it could be cheap.

Weld the new piece on, make it neat. Make the full bar disconnect for offroad only and put it in the back. PITA, but it will lower the stresses on the mount.

you could argue on the basis that it passed a vicroads inspection and there for in their eyes was of a safe standard!

You ain't 'fooling' anyone if you get it welded back on. You've done a proper job if you use a competent welder. You are allowed to weld parts of your vehicle, you don't have to go and buy a new part every time.

X-rayed?

Mate, competent doesn't even mean professional, just anyone who knows how to handle their tool...
