hi guys. trying to diagnose my front wheel not locking properly problem. its locks in when ya turn the hub to lock bt if ya hold the tyre with your hands and turn it when its jacked up you can rotater the tyre with enogh force. at first i thought it was jst turning where ya lock the hubs in but after doing it again im not sure if it was maybe turning inside the diff. its got a lockright in there.

cant check now really coz i have pulled the hub off down to where the axle is now exposed.

just wanna know what part is responsible for the locking in

The knob you turn pushes in a hub gear that locks on another gear that is on the end of the CV.

Undo the little bolts and pull the front cap off, if its all in one piece i'd say you've done a CV/axle as per suggested in your last thread of the same thing.

Doesn't a lockwrong only lock under acceleration, if that's the case turn you front drive shaft with the hubs locked and see what that does

constantly locked , allowed to unlock easily without load (acceleration)

not much with the wheels on the ground.
and spin the wheels with them off.

This is what i encountered with broken CV's. seems fine until a point, then slips as the CV expands.

constantly locked under torque. the cross pins in the centre push open the locker and make it grab the side gears/couplers.

ahk then I'm wrong. If your hub hasn't been pulled apart its unlikely won't be the hub not working. I'm with Dan. Broken axle/cv or broken lockright pins or some thing.

ok thanks guys. what will a broken cv look like when i pull it out? will it be snapped or will it just look normal? im unsure how they work

Post subject:  Re: which part locks the axle on sierra front hubs

the stub could be snapped.
the axle could be snapped.
both of which will be obvious.

Otherwise the outer part will have a crack in it under inspection or the inner will have cracks in it, or chunks removed from it.

this thread sounds familiar, as Dan said look at the CV's or axles. http://auszookers.com/index.php?name=Fo ... ic&t=28349

this one is in regards to how the hub locks my friend. wanted to see if it was the hub spinning under force

This is what the inside of the hub looks like.

I reckon you should pull it apart and have a look

ok i see how that works now. what is the next bit after the hub. that removes with 12mm (i think) bolts?

does the hub lock into that bit and thats how the locking happens?

Post subject:  Re: which part locks the axle on sierra front hubs

the cv and axle are 2 seperate parts are they or does it all come out in one part?

Post subject:  Re: which part locks the axle on sierra front hubs

That whole bit does it. Its called a manual locking hub.

Post subject:  Re: which part locks the axle on sierra front hubs

After removing the outer hub, you will have to remove a cir-clip from the axle. Then you can remove the 12mm bolts and then slide off the rest of the hub.

Get a screw driver to bend back the locking tabs.
Then you'll need a 50mm socket to remove the first nut.

Behind that will be the locking washer thing-o. Followed by another 50mm nut.

I've gone through 3 sets of CV's in the past two months or so, it was easy to pick :D
