Post subject:  Why is my idle high?

Hi Guys,

been off road a bit today, but after about an hour I returned to the road and noticed that at traffic lights I have a NEW constant high idle speed.

Previous to going off road today, my Vitara G16B EFI engine has been running smooth and idling at about 700-750RPM since the engine was fully rebuilt 800Km's ago.

After leaving the track the car would idle at 1600RPM in neutral. Still smooth, not bouncing like a yoyo.
As soon as I put it into gear, and start lifting the clutch off the floor it returns to 800RPM before I accelerate and go through the rest of the gears.

I let the car cool down for 4 hours. Started it back up again and it idles at 1600RPM.

That is causing this? Idler arm? Idle motor?

Sounds like a vacuum hose or air leak somewhere. You should be able to hear it. Who did the rebuild? Perhaps take it back?

low coolant or cooling issues is a possible cause, too

thats a very good point... i had that happen when i cooked the head on my 1.3 engine - i busted a hose and it dropped the coolant, then the thermostat (and the temp guage on the dash) had no reading so the choke came on.. it was then that i realised i'd baked it =)

if its EFI though perhaps theres a fault registering on the computer you can have diagnosed?

Best I listen to your sound advice so I will take it to a Zook Specialist tomorrow morning.
They should be able to do it quickest without having to change a million parts in the process of elimination.

The vacuum sound was. It something I could notice. I can hear the fan belt but that's about it.

Okay, so your guess was the closest.
The vacuum lines were in tact but there appears to have been some clogging in one of the passages. The hose coming off the air intake was checked , and near the throttle body around the throttle cable there was like an idler screw which was screwed in and out of position. Think that screw movement dislodged what ever was stuck within and it's now idling at 1000rpm. Much better than the 1600rpm is was before.

If I have any issues over the next few weeks I will take the throttle body off in the coming months and get it all cleaned up, and whilst I am at it enlarge it and get a larger throttle plate also.

The cooling was fine.
